It said three people
Hello fellow people and Hazelnoots (love it),
This is a drabble I got inspired from the lively discussions and brain-cell sharing at the SW-Discord with @im-oknutzy-trash, @bkfstclubmember and @icaughtfeelsagain
Thank you so much for beta-reading @unadulteratedpaperparadise
O'Knutzy alternative getting together:
The characters and the world that is Sweater Weather/Coast to Coast belong to the wonderful @lumosinlove.
It said three people
Summary: Finn does not know what nature is, Logan has a plan and Leo is cold.
Warning: It gets a bit angsty.
____________________________________________________________
"Ok, we are lost." Finn stated for the fourth time in ten minutes.
"No, we are not." Logan answered for the fourth time in ten minutes with an exasperated groan that drew a chuckle out of Leo, who was walking behind them.
"Of course, we are. Here is nothing!"
"Harzy?"
"Knutty?"
"Do you know how places outside from cities work?"
"Why?"
"Because most of them do not have civilisation... that's, like, the whole point, y'know."
"But how do you know where the hell we are?" Finn turned around himself, gesticulating wildly.
"There are markings on the path? And we have a map?" Logan gave him, waving with the map just as madly as Finn with his arms.
"But-"
"Fish, you desperately wanted to go hiking and camping for once in your live. Get it together and enjoy the sounds that are not traffic and the air that is not half exhaust fumes." Logan snapped playfully and sped up his steps.
They walked on quietly for a few more minutes until Finn voiced the presence of another aspect of nature.
"Ugh, there are bugs everywhere and dirt... so disgusting."
Logan just groaned again, burying his face in his hands while Leo started to laugh, exclaiming "City-boy!" in-between breaths.
They went on like this for a while. Logan and Leo trotting along while Finn complained over every little bug or twig or root that bothered him. Being in the woods was always described as freeing and peaceful but if just one other little beast bit him, Finn would burn that whole thing down.
Just when he considered digging though his backpack for a lighter, Logan stopped at a small clearing.
"Alright, let's just stay here for the night." Leo nodded happily and went to unpack some stuff while Finn had a hard time believing that they were not just joking.
"Here?"
"Yeah. Harzy, get that tent out." Logan was already in camp-mode, puttering around with stuff Finn had never laid his eyes on.
"Like, in the middle of nowhere? In the woods?" more gesticulating.
Leo laughed again "Yes, Finn. What did you think we would be doing while hiking? With a tent?"
With that, the other two continued unpacking while Finn dawned that this was a lot less peaceful and freeing than he thought. He was ripped out of the re-evaluation of his vacation-plans by Logan, adding another coffin nail to his camping adventure.
"So, we have two rolls of toilet paper and a foldable spade. I put them besides the tent -that is still not standing." Logan glanced meaningful at the folded tent in Finns arms, who just stared back in shock.
"A SPADE?"
"Yeah?" Logan just shrugged. "You dig a hole and then you take a shi-"
"Ok, Ok, OK. I got the concept. Why do people do that again? It's completely gross!" Mortified, Finn tuned away, finally setting up the tent. Behind his back, he just heard Leo giggling "City-boy" over and over. He was pathetic, wasn't he? But to hear that giggle, he would do it again. No. Nope. No. Don't think about it.
"Have you started on the tent, yet?" Logan asked airily, knowing exactly that Finn was lost.
"Yes."
"How's it going?"
"Fine." Finn looked up from the mess of fabric and stakes, not missing the teasing glint in the eyes of his best friend. He braced himself for endless chirping, but Leo just got up, leaving a little fire in a stone circle* (please read end notes) under Logan's supervision and helped him setting up the tent while an awkward silence fell upon them. It seemed to sink in that they all have to share that one tent.
The silence was broken by Leo. "Harzy..."
"Mh?"
"What is this?"
"A tent?" It was a tent, wasn't it? He got it from that outdoor store at the mall.
"And how do you expect us to sleep in there?"
"Oh, non. Harzy. We will never fit in there." Logan had looked up from poking the fire.
"But it said three people on the tag!" Finn exclaimed. He was very sure, damn it.
With a sigh Leo turned to Finn " Three people tents never fit three people and luggage, let alone three grown-ass hockey players!"
"Oh." Finn felt his cheeks warm up in embarrassment. Why did the guy at the shop did not warn him?
______________________________________________________________
"Alright, I'll sleep outside. That way I can see the stars all night."
Logan heard Leo offer while patting the shoulder of a slightly ashamed Finn and needed to react immediately.
"NO." He nearly shouted, making the other two turn their heads to him, questioning. "You- Erm... You freeze too fast. I'll sleep outside." Logan could not be in a tiny tent alone with Finn, he would do something very stupid.
"Nonsense." Finn exclaimed, looking worried all of a sudden. "No one sleeps outside. What if bears eat you?"
That pushed a laugh out of Logan's lungs. " Harzy, there are no bears in-"
"Or wolves... Or... or- mountain lions or venomous snakes or spiders... oh god, why did we come here?!."
While Logan was preoccupied with doubling over in laughter, he nearly missed Leo's deadpan reply.
"Finn Callahan O'Hara, do you actually know anything about wildlife?"
"Yeah." Came the defiant reply.
"Really? Because we picked this very region to make sure that all the animals you just listed do not exist here."
"Oh. Good then." Despite turning completely red, the older boy seemed very soothed by the thought of not being eaten in the night.
With that settled, Leo came over, crouching down besides Logan so close their knees were touching, sending a jolt through Logan's body, quickly followed by guilt. The blonde continued getting the fire bigger while clouds were accumulating above them, making him shiver.
"Why the hell is it so cold here? It's August."
"Bad news Pinotte, its actually very warm today." Logan joked in an attempt to calm himself down again.
"God." Leo wrapped himself closer in his hoodie and poked at the fire, before his gaze flew upwards.
"Oh no."
"What?" Finn asked, rather alarmed. He probably thought they spotted a bear anyway.
"It starts to rain."
"Naaah, it's just a drizzle." Logan reassured the younger boy. It always did a bit here.
_____________________________________________________________
It was not a drizzle. Soon they had to extinguish the fire and squeeze into the tent with their backpacks while torrential rains were pouring down outside. Neither of them could even sit upright, let alone move.
"I'm sorry guys," Finn mumbled while trying to navigate his backpack into a corner "Tomorrow, we will go back."
Logan could not stand to see his best friend like that. All sad puppy eyes and slumped shoulders. "Yeah." He said, patting Finns head as lovingly as he dared. "We camp out on your balcony and have the park as the only nature you experience, like the city-boy you are."
The puppy eyes gone, Finn smile warmly at Logan's attempt to cheer him up, but it faltered again as Leo's deep sigh waved over.
"Sorry that it's raining. I hoped for you to see the stars"
Leo looked strangely at Finn and Logan shifted uncomfortably. He had noticed the looks they exchanged but here, he couldn't ignore them. This trip was a horrible idea altogether.
Dinner consisted of cold canned beans and toast
"No Finn, you cannot make a fire in a tent. We will either burn down or suffocate."
Getting ready for the night was awkward as hell. There was not much room and operating camping mats and sleeping bags out of the backpacks was almost as complicated as getting out of their trousers. Brushing teeth was holding the toothbrush out in the rain, simply swallowing the toothpaste and washing it down with a sip of water. Once they all were settled as good as they could, Logan looked over to Leo, buried in his bag, barely suppressing his shivers.
"Come on Pinotte, you're freezing. Get in the middle." With that Logan rolled over Leo, who shifted thankfully towards Finn.
It was not easy but once they were all settled again, Logan found himself too close to Leo. He could smell his soap, his toothpaste and the way it made his heart flutter let his stomach knot in guilt. Mortified, he tried to turn away, but the tent was so small, all they could do was awkwardly spooning each other to even fit inside. He moved his head as far as possible against the backpacks to not touch Leo' neck. He was not allowed to enjoy that, could not risk creeping Leo or getting caught, by Finn, nonetheless.
______________________________________________________________
Leo felt heavenly warm where he was but knew very well that he was, metaphorically and now literally in the middle of something he did not belong to. Logan and Finn had something. And although neither of them seemed to acknowledge it, it was very obvious. Leo would not try to get a foot in the door with either one, as much as he wished for it, he would not ruin it for them. With a deep breath, he closed his eyes and tried not to feel these wonderful boys snuggled to either side of him. This was not what they wanted, after all. It was necessity.
______________________________________________________________
Finn was set alight with panic. He knew that sharing a tight space with Logan was bound to be awkward. Last time he slept so close to Logan, he left for Gryffindor the next day. And then Leo in all of it? What had he thought, getting both boys he had not-very-platonic feelings for on a trip in the middle of nowhere? He squeezed his eyes shut, trying not to think, just to sleep.
______________________________________________________________
Leo was the first to wake up in the morning. Somehow Finn had accomplished to turn around and was snuggled up in his arms. Also, he could feel Logan's head between his shoulder blades. While this was the essence of the few daydreams, he allowed himself from time to time, the circumstances were horribly wrong.
Just necesseties, he told himself. Don't get your silly hopes up. But he did not move. Moving meant being awake and that meant acknowledging the elephant in the tent.
Also, it was still raining. There was nowhere they could go if things got even more uncomfortable and Leo had no intentions in starting this endeavour.
After a while of waiting in this compromised position, Finn blinked blearily, rubbing a hand over his eyes. Then, he just stared at Leo, eyes wide and pressed his fingers to his own lips, nodding towards a still sleeping Logan. They tried to disentangle but there wasn't enough room to move so they were stuck in this pose. Leo gestured at his arms, wrapped around the other boy, with his head and made a face that was supposed to look apologetic, but Finn just shrugged, avoiding his eyes now. Great.
"Sleep alright?" He asked in a hushed whisper.
"Manageable and you?" Finn replied just as quiet.
Leo gave him a lopsided smile and a tiny shrug. "'t was ok, a little cold."
______________________________________________________________
They stayed like that in uncomfortable silence until there were some very quiet, suppressed sobs wafting over from behind Leo's back.
"Tremzy?" Leo tried to look over his shoulder and failed.
"Non."
"Lo, what's up?" Finn was getting worried now and he leaned up as much as he could. Emotions were nothing Logan liked to share; Especially being hurt was something even he rarely saw. But instead of an answer there was just the usual flurry of French. His usual escape-route.
"No, Logan please speak to me in a language I can understand." He turned to face Leo again, pleading. "Leo, what was he saying?"
Leo looked pained but only shrugged. "No idea, it was something Canadian."
With that, Finn carefully scrambled over Leo to get to his friend but slipped with his hand on the sleeping bag fabric and fell into the blonde, faces colliding rather painfully but lips meeting, nonetheless. Finn and Leojerked apart, then froze, staring at each other, the world around them forgotten for a short moment as both tried to figure out what played in the mind of the other. Just as Finn slowly leaned back into Leo to do something, he was ripped out of the bubble by a violent move that made the whole tent shake. Logan was trying to get out, but the heavy rain outside made it rather impossible to leave so he stifled a sob and retreated completely into his sleeping bag, only a tuft of dark hair looking out while silent sobs shook his body.
"Lo", Finn said softly and worried as hell. What had he done? He knew how Logan felt about him, knew how he felt about Logan, even if they never dared to act on it and here, he was almost kissing Leo in this goddamn prison of a tent?
Leo did not move but his eyes switched frantically between the Logan-Burrito and Finn, still on top of him.
Carefully, Finn shifted from Leo's lap towards Logan.
"Lo, please talk." Finn pleaded now. It was ripping him apart to see Logan like this but all that came out of the burrito was some choked mumbling.
Finn did not know what to do. Logan never talked to him about his feelings when they were alone but now there was Leo in the tent with them, no way to escape and something had just shifted between Leo and Finn. He was at loss, starting to tear up himself.
Now Leo, very carefully leaned over Finn to put a hand on the burrito. "Logan. I think you should talk about what is wrong. I promise you I will never tell a soul what happened in this tent."
That made Logan's shaking still a little and a part of his head slowly re-emerged from the sleeping bag, eyes red and puffy, wiping his nose with his sleeve.
"I can't." He said very quietly.
"Why not?" Leo asked calmly.
"I – I don't want you guys to hate me."
"Lo, I could never hate you" Finn exclaimed and reached out to Logan but as teas were spilling out of his eyes again, he stopped the movement.
Finn knew that Logan would not talk on his own, so he needed to make a start. But how? Hey Lo, remember we've been pining after each other for years now? Yeah, I started to fall for Leo here while my feelings for you have not changed in the slightest. Nice, huh? Not an option.
Instead, he just lunged over as good as he could and hugged the Logan-Burrito, burring his face in the fabric.
They were all stuck in here for the time being. Logan could not escape and somehow Finn felt elated about it despite it being probably cruel towards Logan. The elation did not last long as he felt Leo shifting and turning his back to them, possible only because Finn and Logan were closely pressed together, and his heart ached. He was ripped into two directions, wanted Logan to understand, really understand that he loved him, no matter what but also tell Leo that he wanted him there, in his life, with him. Finn craved both and he was freaking out.
______________________________________________________________
"Leo?" Finn asked hesitantly from behind Leo's back.
"'S fine, I'm sorry I cannot give you more privacy but really, I promise I won't spill a thing." That was something Leo had expected sooner or later but not like this. Not being forced to witness both men he fell for finally getting together, leaving him out.
______________________________________________________________
"I know what is between you." Logan said between sobs.
"What?" Finn asked but he didn't have to. His stomach just dropped out of his body into the void.
"And- And I'm not mad at you. I know I kept you waiting for too long without even the hope of becoming more and- and I understand but it hurts so much." It all came out in a flurry and Finn had a hard time following before Logan broke into another round of sobs.
"No. Lo, no you don't understand." He tried to calm Logan down but the more he petted the brunette's head, the worse it got.
"What is there to understand?" Logan's voice rose a bit as he stuck his head out of his burrito. "I've seen it for a while now, the way you look at each other, but witnessing..." He trailed off, seemingly not daring to finish the thought.
"Lo, no. We are not together or something." Finn felt Leo flinch against his back and bit his lip. This was a disaster.
"What- but-" Logan looked more confused than hurt now but he had no idea how Leo was doing behind his back.
Finn took a deep breath. And then another. Apparently, he was the one who had to spill first.
"Alright. If this all goes down in flames, let's just leave it all in this tent. We literally burn it down and go on OK?"
"How comes you want to set things on fire all the time? What-" but Finn pressed his fingers to the other boy's lips.
"I love you Logan. I've loved you for so long, I can't even remember how it is not loving you." He had to take another breath as Logan's eyes widened. They had never said it out loud.
"But I also fell for Leo a while ago. And I know- I know that makes me a horrible, selfish person but I can't help it and I cannot decide between the two of you. Please don't be mad at me." Tears started spilling out of his eyes.
______________________________________________________________
Leo had the feeling his heart had stopped and he was dead now. Finn liked him? Slowly, he turned around to see Logan's gaze flicker between Finn and Leo
"I love you, Finn and I- Me, too."
Too? Leo thought, not daring to believe his wildest dreams might actually become true.
"You like him?" Finn asked, baffled.
Logan nodded slowly and now they were both looking at Leo. Leo, who could not believe that was happening. He bit his lip in an attempt not to cry and just nodded, grabbing both their hands and pressing them to his chest
"But... but can we do that? How does that even work? Is that legal?" Logan was getting panicky again.
Leo grabbed Logan at his sweater to pull him over but ended up pulling himself into the middle instead.
"We can do what we want." He mumbled into Finns shoulder, smiling dumbly.
Logan laughed wetly. "Do I get it right that everyone of us likes the other two and was afraid of admitting it?"
"Yeah." Both, Finn and Leo replied but their similes became confused as Logan started to laugh hysterically.
"Lo?" Finn was rather alarmed by now.
Said boy was rubbing his eyes, gasping for breath. "This is hilarious. The whole situation. Like in a bad rom com and of course we all had to collapse on this horrible hiking trip."
Leo was giggling now too. "I actually wanted to back out after I realised what going hiking with you two meant but I didn't know how."
"Me too." said both Logan and Finn and now all of them were laughing loudly.
After a while, they calmed down again, and Leo spoke out loud what they all thought. "What now?"
"I don't know... I mean it's still raining so there's not much we can do..." The brunette replied casually only to get smacked around the head playfully by Finn.
"Idiot, he means with us. In general. Are we a thing now? All of us?"
"I'd like that." Logan sighed deeply. "But I don't think I'm as brave as Cap and Loops are."
"We don't need to go public." Leo countered and Finn nodded.
"But Finn... it's the same all over again. I've never wanted to hide. I still don't want to."
"So, you'd rather not be with us?" Leo strained his neck to properly look at Logan. Why was he still so reluctant? Didn't he want them as much as Leo wanted?
"I- I don't know. What if it gets out? We're not Cap, we're exchangeable... What if it gets too much for one of us, what if-"
_____________________________________________________________
"Logan, please calm down." Finn caressed his cheek because he could and this time, it made Logan calm down a little.
"We are not like Caps and Loops were. Our families can know, the team can know. We are not bound to be completely secret or completely out. It's not a light-switch, it could be more... like a dimmer." He had to pause and swallow a laugh at Logan's incredulous face.
"Light-switch metaphors?"
"No one knows if one of us gets annoyed with everything. This is why people talk. I think if we can talk about what's going on, everything will be fine. Now stop it, I'm the worry wart and you're stealing my job." Leo continued as Finn was busy stifling his laughter.
"O- OK."
"What?" Finn asked with a raised eyebrow.
"You know." Was Logan actually blushing?
"Say it." Yes, he was, and Finn was not letting it go. He needed to hear it.
"Alors,-"
"NO FRENCH!"
"Alright, alright. I want it if you two want it." Logan looked between the other two and Finn felt Leo nodding as animatedly on his shoulder as he did.
"Let's be together, then." Logan concluded with the widest smile Finn had seen in years. He felt like squealing like a little kid over a puppy.
"I wanted to do that for months" Leo whispered into Finns ear as he leaned over and kissed Logan. Finn had to bury his face in Logan's neck, breathing him in, trying to stay composed. Them kissing was the best thing he's ever seen, and he was so filled with love that his chest was close to combustion.
Their chaste, careful kisses quickly turned into heavy snogging and when Logan grabbed Finn at his collar to include him, the redhead complied instantly. However, in the confined space, moving was demanding and Leo's arm slipped on the fabrics. He lost contact to Finn's lips and buried Logan beneath himself who let out a loud oof.
After another while of trying to figure out a comfortable position to make out in a tent they couldn't even sit upright in, they gave up eventually.
"We have all the time in the world". Finn concluded after failing repeatedly to get on top of Leo without pushing Logan into the clammy tent walls, just dropping between them.
Leo and Logan instantly made a thing out of unzipping all sleeping bags to create a cuddly nest and snuggle close to Finn, one on each side. The redhead drew and arm around each of his boys, afraid to wake up from this dream, while Logan and Leo were holding hands on top of Finn's chest.
"Let's just wait for the rain to stop and go home. There, we have quite a lot of space to explore all the possibilities." Leo commented cheeky, receiving one of Logan's feared finger-jabs.
Finn kissed both on the crowns of their heads, enjoying the feeling of them burying their faces in the junction of his neck, drifting back to the most comfortable sleep he ever had.
*Alright: Important: DO NOT JUST MAKE OPEN FIRES IN THE WOODS!!!! If you want to go on a hike, inform yourself concerning wild-camping and open fire. The rules probably change according to season and region.
Stay safe and channel your inner Hufflepuff
P.S: There will be a little different version of it on AO3 and I put the link here once its up there.

Friends Like These
Aelin cursed as she stared at the pan of green beans she pulled from her oven. Frowning she glared at the mess of crispy fried onions on top and the edges that were most certainly black instead of golden brown.
“Well this was a terrible idea.”
She didn't even like green bean casserole but Lysandra had insisted they needed green beans of some sort and Aelin was a mess of uncertainty. She wanted to bring an extra chocolate pie but Lys refused that front citing that she had all her pie bases covered.
Aelin did not believe her. For as much as she loved her best friend, Lys did not understand Aelin’s desires for chocolate and pie in general.
Back to the green beans however, Aelin was certain they were burned. Who the hell liked green beans anyways?
“A real, real terrible idea.”
Talking to herself wasn't going to fix anything, so Aelin grabbed her oven mitts and made for the door of her apartment. By some twist of fate and intense insistence, Aelin lived across the hall from her best friend and cousin. Lysandra and Aedion had only been married a few months and they were already intent on being the go-to couple for holidays and other occasions. As long as it meant Aelin didn't have to clean her place, she didn't care.
She left her apartment door open and crossed the hall to Lysandra’s.
"Open up bitch,” she called and kicked the door. Too late did she think that the neighbors would not appreciate her antics. She received far too many looks of exasperation from them anyways.
Despite how much she really didn’t care, she glanced down the hall. Maybe she could ditch this poorly made casserole on some unsuspecting soul. As she glanced down towards the elevators, she caught sight of a ridiculously good-looking man coming up the hall and he had most definitely heard her.
His silvery hair was stark compared to his bronze skin and his button up shirt strained against his obvious muscles. Oh he was very attractive. Aelin had quite often found herself fondling over the likes of Rowan Whitethorn.
It was highly unfortunate that he was already here, considering Aelin was still in yoga pants and an oversized cardigan stained with bleach from a misadventure in cleaning. Not to mention her hair was a failing top knot and she hadn’t even put on a coat of chapstick today. Oh hell, she was most definitely staring at him.
“Galathynius,” Rowan said, giving her a long, penetrating look. His generous mouth tilted into something akin to a sneer.
“Whitehorn,” she replied. She prided herself at least on the fact that she managed not to lick her lips while checking him out. Because holy hell it should be illegal for him to look so well put together. She wasn’t sure if she preferred him in this almost professional style as compared to the dark grunge that he was usually found in. Or both. Definitely both.
Aelin was saved from saying or doing anything else as Lysandra opened the door to her apartment.
“You actually brought something other than chocolate,” Lysandra said with an amused sort of expression
“Bite me,” Aelin snapped and swerved past into the apartment.
She missed whatever Lysandra said to Rowan, but it was clearly filled with more love and appreciation than what was extended to Aelin.
Aelin entered the kitchen and was immediately greeted by the scents of cooking turkey, stuffing, and rolls. It was wonderful. She stuck her still hot pan on the edge of the counter while she dug out another hotpad from where Lysandra usually kept them.
Aedion was busy setting things up in the small living room where he’d dragged out their table and an extra foldable one. It looked like there were far more place settings than Aelin had been expecting.
“Hey Aelin,” Aedion said as he settled a floral arrangement on the table. It was a cheapish plastic one—but it reminded Aelin of years growing up with him and tossing the abused decoration around the table to use it as a means of hiding from Aunt Maeve.
“Hey, where d’you want this,” she asked, holding up the green beans.
“Wherever should be good,” Aedion said with a shrug. He looked the pan over and frowned. “You burned the green beans?”
“No one even likes green beans Ashryver,” Aelin fired back. She slapped down the hotpad and the casserole and tried to pretend she didn’t care.
Truth was, she’d actually tried on the casserole. But she wouldn’t admit that. It would just make the end product all the more pathetic.
“Thanks so much for bringing pie, Rowan,” Lysandra was saying from the kitchen. “I tried asking Lorcan, but he was staunchly against it.”
“Nah, the bastard would never make such a commitment,” Rowan. Aelin glanced at him to see a crooked smile that did not help her feel any better about herself. “He will bring plenty of booze though.”
“At least he’s good for something,” Lysandra laughed. Her laugh was short lived though as she looked between Aelin and Rowan. It was no secret the two had nothing short of a hostile relationship. No matter how long their friend groups had been integrated for—they always found a way to be at each other’s throats.
Lysandra took the bag of pie from Rowan and smiled gratefully. “Also, I appreciate everything you’ve done in the shop, too. I don’t know what I wouldn’t do without the help.”
Just across the street, Lysandra was opening a clothing boutique that would hopefully expand into a makeup and hair styling salon as well. While Aedion was finishing his law degree and working full time in an apprenticeship, Lysandra had bitten the bullet to fulfill her dream of owning her own business. Even if it was a slightly inconvenient time to be an entrepreneur. Aelin couldn’t have been prouder of her best friend.
“Oh, until everyone else gets here, Rowan can help you move that dresser Aelin,” Lysandra said suddenly. Aelin froze in a sudden wave of panic. “She’s getting rid of that tiny little dresser she has and got a new one. You’ve been complaining about it all week.”
Rolling her eyes, Aelin brushed a few loose bits of hair from her forehead. “It hasn’t been all week.”
“Right, just the hours we’ve been together,” Lysandra said with an ironic sort of expression. In truth, the two had spent nearly every waking minute together in the hopes of getting the shop ready to open.
Scowling, Aelin made her way back to the door of the apartment. “Can’t believe you married her Aedion. C’mon, buzzard. I need help, apparently.”
“You can’t move a damn dresser by yourself?” Rowan groused. But he followed after her, shooting irritated looks over his shoulder no doubt.
“Be nice to each other!” Aedion called after. “It’s Thanksgiving.”
The door closed softly behind them. The hall was silent as they crossed the short distance to Aelin’s place. She was muttering under her breath the entire time about how annoying it was to have him in her apartment.
As soon as they entered Aelin’s apartment, Fleetfoot was on them. The dog, despite loving her mother to no end, went to Rowan with an excited flap of her tail. Rowan glared down at Fleetfoot in exasperation.
“Don’t you give your dog any attention?” He asked.
Aelin gave him the finger over her shoulder as she went to her room. “Get your ass in here and help me.”
Rowan cursed under his breath and followed. “Why do you need a new dresser anyways. The old one was fine.”
“Well someone told me it was too small. And someone said that how could a substantial amount of clothing even fit in the drawers I had. And that same someone told me that something had to change.” She leaned against her bedroom door and glared at him. “And that, dumbass, was you. So now I have a giant dresser that I don’t know what to do with. So really, this is all your fault.”
Rowan quirked a brow and looked down at her, but he said nothing.
For the past three months since Rowan had begun helping Lysandra in her shop, the two had started something. Something that neither knew how to define or explain. It involved quite a bit of kissing, sex, and staying over at one another’s apartments. And no one else in their friend group knew.
The previous week Rowan had made a comment about never having enough space for his things in Aelin’s place which had resulted in an uncomfortable conversation of defining what it was exactly they were doing together. It promptly led to ignored texts and phone calls.
“You got a new dresser,” Rowan said, finally.
Aelin dropped her eyes from his and turned slightly so she was leaning against the wall instead of the doorjamb. She looked into her room where the new dresser was standing at an awkward angle. She hadn’t quite known what to do with it so she’d left it half up against one wall and half blocking her closet. Rowan wasn’t supposed to find out about the dresser this way. Mostly because she didn’t want for it to be a big deal, even though it was...they’d danced around the idea of each other and being more than friends with benefits for so long that this—giving up space and a little bit of independence was huge.
Especially for Aelin.
“I just wanted some more space,” she said dismissively.
Rowan’s eyes were still on her. She could feel them burning into her. If she looked at him now, she was certain she would combust. There was always something about Rowan that made her feel different. That made her feel complete. It was strange to say. Especially after being on her own for so long. But being with him, even for the few short months, had given her a new sense of purpose and self that Aelin had never had before.
“More space?” Rowan asked, stepping closer to her.
Aelin chewed on her bottom lip and finally looked up. “Less space?”
Rowan grinned down at her, his body heat completely enveloping her as he pulled her to him.
Aelin went willingly, wrapping her arms around him and clinging to him tightly. It was slightly embarrassing how much she’d missed him. Even in this one week of being apart and not even texting had been unbearable.
With gentle hands, Rowan cupped her face and ran his calloused fingers over her cheeks. The feel of it caused Aelin to shiver and immediately want to burrow into him again. Rowan had other plans as he tilted her chin up and captured her lips with his.
Sighing happily, Aelin melted into his touch. She curled her fingers in his hair and pressed herself harder against him. Every other plan for the day went right out her head. None of it mattered when he was so close.
A loud knock sounded on the front door and Fenrys’ voice called out from the kitchen. “Have you two killed each other or what? Come on! Turkey’s getting cold.”
“We’re coming,” Rowan called out as Aelin pressed her lips into his neck, in part to suppress her grin and also because she wasn’t ready to let him go. “Galathynius can’t make up her mind.”
Aelin nipped at his skin with her teeth and his hands tightened on her hips.
“Finish after turkey, I didn’t spend all morning making yams for them to go to waste,” Fenrys yelled back. The front door slammed shut as he left.
Aelin couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped her as she kissed her way back to Rowan’s lips. “I don’t want to go.”
Rowan pressed his forehead against hers, breath slightly uneven. “Unless you want to tell everyone about us.”
Shaking her head, Aelin sighed. “I’m not ready to share you.”
She of course already did share him with everyone, but Rowan seemed to grasp the underlying meaning of her words as he captured her mouth once more. The kiss was hot and deep and Aelin was ready to lock the door to her apartment and feign death or illness if it meant she could spend the day wrapped up in Rowan.
“Fireheart,” he whispered.
“Buzzard,” she replied.
He smiled against her lips before pulling back and running his thumb over her cheek. “Beautiful.”
“I look like hell,” she complained.
Rowan shook his head. “Beautiful,” he repeated before regretfully pulling away.
Aelin sighed before running her hands down his chest and interlocking he fingers with his, just for a moment.
“Stay the night?” she asked quietly.
Rowan rolled his eyes. “You just need help with that dresser.”
“True,” she admitted, “but I also missed you.”
Rowan nodded once before giving her a quick, chaste kiss. “C’mon or else we’ll really have to tell everyone about us.”
Sighing, Aelin pulled away completely. She left her room and made sure Fleetfoot was settled on the couch, and episode of “The Office” playing on the tv to keep the dog company.
Before they let her apartment, she looked back at Rowan with a determined gleam in her eyes. “Soon.”
“Soon,” Rowan agreed.
And they went back to being somewhat tolerable friends.

The heat was overwhelming in Joci’s top floor flat. She ran her fingers through her mussed hair. She hadn’t had it properly styled in almost two years. It was time. She opened her closet, choosing the only straight-line pastel sundress she had, and one of the sets of undergarments paid for by Fiske. Much cooler than my sweater and denims, she admitted to herself.
When she stepped out of the salon she nearly bumped into Melody, the server she’d been getting to know. She was wearing a similar outfit, a frilly shoulderless white dress. She had gone shopping and was carrying a tiny bag from the seamstress who had made Joci’s nautical suit in one hand and a foldable paper fan in the other. Sweet perfume seemed to emanatre from her. Joci was feeling good about herself, pretty like her and the seamstress. She decided to ask her out for a drink. They’d found an outdoor cafe within sight of a pond. It was much nicer than the bars Joci had been frequenting, and Melody seemed far too classy for those kinds of places. Besides, the breeze felt nice on her legs.
“I’m kinda su’prised ya came ou’ wit’ me,” said Joci. “I mean all las’ minute an’ th’ like.” She offered a lopsided smile.
“This is what friends do, Joci,” she replied with a bubbly laugh. “I always hate it when people I know are deployed. I never know if I’m going to see them again.”
The smile faded a bit. “So ya go ou’ wit’ all of ‘em...”
“Well,” said Melody as their tall kal’dorei server returned to the table. “They’re not all my close friends. I only take up drinks with those people I actually enjoy talking to.”
Joci tucked her hair behind her ear. “Yer too nice ta me,” she said. As the two mint juleps were placed on the wrought iron table, she slipped the server 5 gold pieces. He bowed slightly and left. Joci continued: “I ain’ tha’ special.”
“Maybe not to everyone,” Melody shrugged, her braided blonde hair slipping over her shoulder as it dropped. “Nobody is special to everyone, you know?”
Joci knit her brows. “I donnae... me bruv seemed pret’y special, nah, important ta lots o’ people.” She took a sip of her drink, the mint cooling her mouth and the syrup puckering her lips. This is ... sweet, she thought.
“What was your brother’s name?”
“Brian,” said Joci. She set her drink down.
“Brian Wellson,” she said, “Brian...” Melody lazily fanned herself. “Sounds familiar, sure. He was in the Courier quite a bit for awhile. I think he’s the guy who died but came back to life—”
Joci’s jaw dropped as far as her heart felt like it had. “He’s alive?”
Melody stopped fanning herself. “No, no,” she said, watching her friend experience a mishmash of emotion. Fuck, she thought. Fuck fuck fuck. She set the fan down and slid her hand across the table. “Years ago, he was shot, then came back to life. He’d been in hiding, Joci.”
Breathe in. Jocelyn peered down at the woman’s hand, smooth and with slender fingers. She advanced her own, resting it atop Melody’s. Breathe out. “Et still hurts,” she said simply.
“It’s ok — I... I know what it’s like to lose a brother. I’ve lost all five to these damned Wars,” she said, eyes watery. “I’m the only one of my family left.”
Joci squeezed her hand. “Yer bruvs — di’ they join ‘cuz they wan’ed ta?”
“Yeah,” said Melody. She pulled the cloth napkin she’d placed on her lap and dabbed her eyes. “Yeah, they did.”
“They was ‘eroes then,” said Joci. “Et was th’ choice they made, yanno?”
“This right here,” said Melody as her napkin down, “this is why you’re special to me.” She placed her other hand atop Joci’s, fingers tracing the former brawler’s misaligned knuckles. She smiled; it was small but genuine.
Breathe in. Joci’s faced burned; she wanted to pull away, but to be spoken to with such candour about something so intimate outside of a clinical setting‽ This was something to which she unaccustomed. It made her feel real, seen, like an actual person. Breathe out, she thought. She’s not going to hurt you.
“I donnae why anyone woul’n’ be kin’ to ya,” she said.
“Just like we can’t be special to everyone, others can be cruel.”
“Bu’ why ya? Yer—”
“I’m just a waitress, Joci. I’m not special to many, especially the rich.”
“Ya be special ta me,” said Jocelyn. She didn’t even think about it. She was shocked she had said it. Those words, they had just rolled off her tongue. Like a reflex. Her body warmed, her hands began to sweat. The fuck? She took a drink.
Melody squeezed Joci’s hand tighter. After a moment, she lifted the one atop Joci’s. She took it into hers. She dipped her head, bringing Joci’s hand to her cheek. She let go. Joci inhaled sharply, her hand touching her friend’s face with all the delicacy she could muster. Melody leaned into her hand and kissed her palm. She looked up. Joci was shocked and humbled, caring and vulnerable. They locked gazes.
Joci slowly retracted her hand. She was shaking. She swiped at her eyes, never breaking their connection. Melody took up her julep and sipped from it. The scent of fresh mint and aged bourbon and her perfume, sweet and floral, enveloped them. Joci desperately wanted to freeze the moment, to live in it for as long as they could.
“I’m glad I know you,” said Melody after a time. Her cheeks were pink, as was her neckline.
“Yea?”
“Yeah,” she replied before draining her glass. She smacked her lips. “You know,” she said, setting the glass down. “I’d like to know you better, more deeply.”
Joci froze. Breathe in. Memories of who she had been washed across her mind’s eye. Inwardly, she cringed. She knew that someday she would have to tell Melody about who she had been. She’s not going to hurt you, she told herself again. Breathe out.
“I...” she stammered, disarmed by her companion's sincerity. “I’d like et, to know ya bettah,” she said. “I’d like et more than ya know.”

I have been playing a game recently (not telling which because of spoilers) and there are these magician enemies. They have that classic magician look, white gloves, tailcoat and top hat. And to top it all off they look like Annabeth. I couldn't get that image of magician Annabeth and assistant/spectator Percy out of my head. Do whatever you want with that information.
This is entrapment. LIke I could get an amazing prompt like this and not write a story about it? How dare you! (Thank you!) For real though, this actually turned out super cute and I really enjoyed writing it! I hope you do to!
XxXxXxXxX
“Are you ready?” Percy asked, hoisting his little sister a little higher in his arms to fix his grip.
She giggled and threw her little hands up! “Yeah! Let’s do this!” She declared, giggling.
Percy laughed and pushed the door open to the small little magic shop, tucked away in the corner of downtown.
Honestly, she still couldn’t believe he managed to get tickets. The magician had been scheduled for one of the large performance halls, but she had apparently decided to do a “pop-up show” At some local magic shop for a small group of people, first come first serve. Luckily Percy had been checking her Twitter to see if there were any tickets for her other show yet when he saw the tweet. He had been quick enough to grab two of the smaller tickets thankfully.
Now that his sister was starting to get a little older and develop an interest in various things, she had seen a magic show on TV and was obsessed with it.
So Percy, determined to be the best older brother he could, felt it was his responsibility to take her to a magic show. After a night of googling various magicians, had found one that was pretty popular that went by “Athena.”
So here he was now, shuffling his way into one of the foldable chairs that had been set up in the small magic shop, in front of a stage. There was a small motley crew of other people there, some parents taking excited kids, some people who looked like might have been magicians themselves based off how comfortable they seemed, and a few couples that were probably out on a date.
They had a few minutes before the show started, so Percy put down their jackets to reserve their seats and let Estelle run around the shop, looking at the various things. She was well behaved, due to his mom being the best in the world, so he just stayed close to her but let her have fun. He had promised to let her pick out one thing, so she was staring at everything with the most serious expression he had seen on his little sister as if her life depended on it.
Eventually announced that the show was starting and he had to corale his sister back to the seats, promising her that she could look after the show.
He leaned over as the lights started to dim. “You need to be behaved during the show, okay? Don’t distract the magician or the magic won’t work!”
Estelle nodded. “Duh!” Percy bit back a smile, she definitely had his attitude too. “Mom told me to be quiet when she’s doing her magic. I’m not a kid.” She said, pouting and crossing her arms.
Percy just messed up her hair, nodding. “Of course.”
The lights dimmed, and a spotlight was placed on the stage. Honestly, Percy wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the show. All the clips he had seen of her on youtube had her on these large stages, with smoke machines, dramatic light cues and amazing tricks that required more space than the shop had. She was a show woman for sure.
Instead though, she stepped out from behind a heavy red curtain. She seemed like she had stepped out of time. She was wearing an old fashioned suit, with two long coattails. He saw a neat long braid resting over one shoulder. She walked out, and the group offered her a polite applause. She glanced across the crowd, gave them off a smirk dripping with confidence and fell forward into a well practiced bow.
She stood up, tapping her foot and held out her hand as a staff appeared out of nowhere into it.
“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my show!”
She smirked and instantly Percy knew he was in for a show. And she certainly didn’t disappoint.
The show had been a lot smaller than what he had seen on youtube. Simpler tricks that were done so flawlessly he honestly had no idea how most of them were done. Meanwhile her wit kept the group laughing the entire time as she would ramble on, weaving stories and telling jokes that had him laughing the entire time. Once she had even called for volunteers, and Estelle had stood up on her seat raising her hand before he could sit her down. Athena had laughed and called on her, motioning for Percy to bring her up.
So Percy had scooped her and helped her to the front of the stage. It was a card trick that had completely blown his mind. He thought he had figured it out, but the twist at the end left him as speechless as Estelle was. She gave him one last smirk before she dismissed him back to his seat.
She was clearly having a blast with the show.
The rest of the show wasn’t a disappointment either. She had a seemingly endless amount of tricks, flowing from one to another smoothly. Eventually the show ended to a massive standing ovation.
While Percy hadn’t been sure what he expected, other than hoping for something that wasn’t awkward and clumsy, he had never expected to have so much fun. Estelle also seemed to have had the time of her life based off how often she was cheering and clapping with all the tricks.
Athena was left standing there in a bow as she seemed to bask in the applause for a moment, before standing up, tipping her hat, then vanishing back behind the curtain as the lights in the store were turned back up.
The crowd slowly dispersed as some people settled into purchasing some stuff from the shop, while others loitered around, hoping to get a chance to talk to the magician.
Glancing over Estelle was still grinning at him. “She was so cool!” Percy nodded, messing up her hair gently. “Right? Now how about we pick out that toy so you can be just like her?”
Estelle nodded and ran off, going to where apparently she had decided to get her toy from.
Percy followed after her, grinning as he relished in seeing how happy she looked. Estelle honestly did have the best smile in the world.
It had taken another few minutes for Percy to finally get Estelle to decide on what to buy, before she took her up to the counter to buy it. As it was being rung up, Estelle was practically bouncing at his side.
After the receipt was handed to him, he turned and offered the bag to the little girl. “Would you like to hold it?”
He asked, but was surprised to see her staring off to the side at something else.
Following her gaze, he saw Athena talking to someone.
Estelle just tugged at them hem of his hoodie, still looking at Athena like she was seeing God.
Grinning, he knew it was time for big brother to save the day. He thanked the cashier, before bending down and scooping up Estelle into an arm. He made his way over, putting on the confidence that was easy to have when he was doing something for his sister’s sake.
He waited patiently, close enough to show he was interested in talking with her next, but not close enough to intrude onto the other conversation.
Eventually the other person seemed to wave goodbye, and Athena met eyes with him for a moment, before she glanced over at Estelle and her eyes widened and he could practically see her heart melt. Estelle had that effect on people.
Athena moved over to them, a confident smirk appearing on her face. “Well hello there, I hope you enjoyed the show!”
“You were amazing!” Estelle said, throwing her arms up and nearly hitting Percy accidentally, but she seemed too excited to notice. “You’re so magical! It’s amazing! You’re my hero!”
Adorably, Athena actually seemed to blush a little at the girl’s words.
It was then Percy noticed that the magician was actually really beautiful. Her eyes were gray and stormy, only seeming to add to her air of confidence and power. But her smile was bright and friendly. She also looked really good in a suit.
“Well thank you, I’m glad I could have such a cute fan.” She said. “ I think though, I might still have one more trick in me.”
Estelle’s eyes widened. “Really?”
Annabeth nodded. “I mean, a magician never let’s the show end, right?”
Estelle nodded. “Of course!” She said with such confidence, Percy almost believed her for a moment.
Athena laughed, before she seemed to move her hand for a moment, before meeting his eyes. A heartbeat later a flower appeared in her hands out of seemingly nowhere.
Estelle let out a cheer as Athena laughed and handed her the flower. “A little gift for you. I put some of my magic in it, so I’ll let you have some.” She said with a wink as Estelle held it gingerly like it was the most precious thing in her life. Honestly, Percy thought it might have been at that moment.
“Thank you!” She cooed, making both Percy’s and Athena’s heart melt.
Pausing, he knew his mom might be a little mad at him spoiling her so much but he set her down gently.
“Well, with all that magic in you, how about you go grab that other box? You need plenty of tricks if you’re going to be a magician after all!”
Estelle’s eyes widened, before she reached up, making Percy lean down so she could wrap her tiny arms around his neck. “You’re the best big brother!” She declared, before running off to the nearby aisle. She was close enough that Percy could still see her so he turned his attention back to Athena for a moment.
“I think you made my sister’s night. Thank you.”
Athena brushed her braid back over her shoulder. “It was my pleasure, she’s adorable. She’s lucky to have such a good big brother it seems.”
Percy felt a blush creep on his cheeks as he scratched the back of his neck. “I just try to do the best I can. She’s too cute to say no too anyway.” He paused. “Did you need that flower back?”
Athena shook her head and smiled. “Nah, it’s nothing special. Just don’t tell her that.” She said with a wink. “The real magic was seeing her smile.”
Percy nodded knowingly. “She has the cutest smile. I’m glad we got to catch this show.”
The blonde magician nodded and shifted her weight. “That’s why I still do these small shows. I got started in tiny shops like this, and while it’s incredible to perform in front of an entire stage, there’s something unique about a small intimate crowd that just is irreplaceable. Making magic come to life in front of you? That’s the real fun.” She paused, glancing over at Estelle. “I was like her when I was a kid. I guess I’m finally paying it forward.”
Percy gave her a soft smile. “Wow. You really are amazing. I was worried you’d be… I don’t know…” He trailed off. He wasn’t sure exactly what he expected, but certainly not someone as sincere as her.
Athena laughed knowingly. “I know what you mean. Don’t worry. A big stage can go to your head easily, especially when your trade is making crowds of people dance in the palm of your hand. But I have some good friends that don’t let me forget where I got started. Piper won’t let my head get too big.” She said fondly.
Percy nodded. “She sounds like a good friend. But you really were incredible. You blew my mind the entire show, and I know Estelle won’t stop talking about this for weeks.”
“Then my job is done.” Athena said with a slight bow, before nudging his side. “I think she needs her super brother.”
Glancing over, he saw Estelle standing on the tips of her toes as she reached for a box that was just out of reach.
“Careful!” Percy said a little too quickly, moving over to get it before she could accidentally pull something heavy down onto her.
Glancing back, he saw Athena watching them with a soft smile. She gave him a tiny thumbs up, and Percy blushed. She was too cute. A brilliant showman, and a genuine person?
Moving back with Estelle he paused. “What do you say to Athena?”
Estelle held the big box in her hands but grinned. “Thank you for the magic flower! I promise I’ll do all sorts of magic!”
Athena smiled. “I hope one day I can watch you on stage! I look forward to it.”
Estelle saluted, making them laugh as Annabeth reached out with one hand, shaking Estelles as Percy watched his sister giggled happily.
Almost reluctantly, he knew he had to get Estelle back soon. “It’s getting pretty late for her, but it was really… really nice talking to you. Thank you again, for everything.”
He said as Athena just bowed in response, tipping her hat. “The show must go on.”
Percy paid for the second set for Estelle as he watched Athen turn back to finish packing up some things.
As they were about to leave, he paused. He knew once he walked out that door, he’d never get the chance to talk to her again, and she was a magical experience he really wanted to see more of. He at least had to try. He set down Estelle for a second. “Wait right here, I need to tell Athena one last thing, okay?” Estelle hummed in response, she was too busy staring at the big box she was holding.
Percy quickly made his way over to Athena. “Hey, sorry to bother you…”
The woman turned around, surprised before she grinned. “Did you need a magic flower too?”
He laughed, scratching the back of his neck. “No, but I was hoping I could give you my number.” His cheeks were burning as he felt his confidence starting to falter. Asking a woman out who was way out of his league was much harder than introducing his sister to her hero. “You were just… really cool to talk to. I’d like to do it again sometime…” He said, proud he didn’t flub any of the words.
The blonde looked surprised for a moment as a blush crept on her cheeks. A sly smile crept on her face. “Well you already have mine, so I suppose that’s fair.”
Percy’s face went blank. “What? I don’t…”
She just gave him a smug grin, before pointing at her side.
He was confused for a moment, as his hand instinctively went to his pocket. He paused as he reached in it, feeling a card he definitely didn't have in there when he entered the shop.
Pulling it out, he found a small notecard with a phone number and a little magicians hat drawn on it.
His eyes widened as he looked up at her. “What? When did you… how…”
The blonde just laughed at his expression, winking. “A magician never reveals her secrets.” She said, making him smile despite himself. “Besides, I wasn’t sure if you were going to ask me out or not, and I always plan ahead.”
“You’re incredible.” He offered.
“So you’ve said.” She teased, but the faint blush on her cheeks let Percy know she wasn’t quite as unflappable as she liked to appear.
“I guess it’s my turn to impress you next time we see each other.”
Her grin only widened. “I look forward to it.”
Percy just gave her one more hopefully-not-too-goofy smile before he went back to take Estelle home. He definitely had his work cut out for him if he was going to impress her, but he had a few tricks up his sleeve.

40 Small Things You Can Start Doing to Save Our Planet
You don’t have to pack up and live in a van or a tiny house and start a zero waste life (although you totally can if that’s your jam!) to reduce your CO2 emissions. There are plenty of things you can start doing right now that will help.
1. Turn off your water while shaving or brushing your teeth. Seriously, you should already be doing this.
2. Carpool, take the bus, take the train, bike, or walk where possible. Yes, I know walking home from work in the summer sucks, but it will suck a whole lot more when the earth is 2 degrees hotter. If your school or work is too far away to do this regularly, try finding parking further away from your destination and park there for the day. Not only will this help cut down on your fuel usage, but you get in some exercise as a bonus.
3. Shop locally sourced products. Did you know that the majority of resources involved in making a product go to the production and distribution of it, and not the final product itself? Buying locally sourced products not only helps boost the local economy, but also cuts down on the energy and resources needed to transport the product to its destination.
4. Speaking of shopping, bring reusable bags! According to the Center for Biological Diversity, it only takes approximately 14 bags for the equivalent of gas to drive 1 mile, and only 1% of plastic bags are returned for recycling. Not only do single use bags use fossil fuels for production, but they also end up as toxic waste and landfill. Reusable bags can be bought for as little as 99c each, and can be used hundreds of times. Many are even biodegradable to ensure they don’t end up as long term landfill.
5. Use the 4 R’s. Many people believe in the 3 R’s, but did you know there’s a fourth? Refuse. Refuse to use unnecessary products that create single use waste, such as single use grocery bags. Reduce the amount of products you buy and waste you use, when it’s impractical or impossible to eliminate them entirely. Reuse whatever you can, such as jars and cans. I’ll have an article soon about 50 household items that can be easily reused. And finally, recycle whatever you can’t reuse any further.
6. Read up on the recycling rules for your municipality. Chances are, that pizza box might not be recyclable after all. Many areas have rules regarding items that were used to store food, such as chip packets and pizza boxes, as the oil may be in the cardboard. Read up on the rules so you know what you can actually recycle, and whether you should be washing and taking apart bottles before you toss them.
7. Replace leaky taps and pipes. If you have a single leaky faucet that drips once every 6 seconds, that’s 347 gallons (almost 1,314 litres) a year dripping out your tap. Replace or seal them where possible.
8. Turn off appliances at the wall when they aren’t in use, and turn off lights when you aren’t in the room.
9. Cut down your meat intake. Don’t get me wrong, I love meat. However, meat agriculture takes up a gross amount of land, water, and resources. The emissions from the meat industry outweigh the emissions of all cars, trains, boats, and planes combined. You don’t have to go cold-turkey (pun fully intended), but cutting down your meat consumption to only a couple meals a week can greatly help. According to earthday.org, if the entire U.S. did not eat meat or cheese for just one day a week, it would be the equivalent of taking 7.6 million cars off the road. Try going meat free for one or more days per week.
10. Use a reusable water bottle. Stainless steel and aluminium water bottles (such as Hydroflask or Kathmandu, not sponsored, I just like the brands) are great as they have a long life cycle, can be recycled, and you don’t risk BPA and other chemicals leeching into your water from plastic. If you don’t live somewhere with good water, buy an under sink filter or even a Brita. I prefer under sink filters as they’re easy to install and in the long run they’re cheaper and produce less waste, but both options are better than buying cases of water bottles.
11. Put a bucket or old ice cream container in your sink to catch runoff. My grandma, who was raised during the depression, has always done this. Use it to collect any water that doesn’t have contaminants or soap, so you can pour it on houseplants or in your garden.
12. Use non-toxic biodegradable laundry and dishwashing products so that you aren’t washing toxic chemicals down the drain.
13. Bring a reusable thermos or coffee cup to get your coffee. If you don’t make coffee at home, try bringing your own thermos or coffee cup to your local coffee joint. Most stores will be happy to make your drink in there, and some stores even offer discounts for you doing so!
14. Wash your hair less. Not only is this good for your hair, but it also means less toxic waste getting into the sewer. Many people (including me) are ditching shampoo altogether and just using conditioner, but if you can’t go without your shampoo, try to reduce your hair washing to once a week.
15. If it’s yellow, let it mellow! If you’re just doing a Number One, you really don’t need to flush every time. An average toilet uses 1.4 gallons of water for a flush (but if you have a toilet dating before 1995, you may be using up to 7 gallons per flush!), if you pee 10 times a day, that’s 14 gallons of water. If you flush every second pee, you’ll save 7 gallons of water per day, or 2,555 gallons per year.
16. Air dry clothes instead of using the dryer. My dryer is strictly reserved for emergencies. Even in the smallest apartment, you can find a foldable clothesline that suits your needs. Place it next to a vent or radiator for maximum drying abilities.
17. Have a baby? Use reusable cloth diapers. One child can use anywhere between five to eight thousand diapers. That’s a lot of landfill.
18. Plant a tree. Did you know that the average person would need to plant almost 9 trees per month for their life to offset their carbon emissions? The good news is that even planting just one tree will help. Read up on what trees and native plants are goo for your area.
19. Use cruise control when in level areas. Cruise control can seriously help reduce your fuel consumption, but it works best in level areas. If you’re driving in a hilly terrain, it’s best to use your old fashioned gas pedal.
20. Getting a new car? Consider an electric, or at least a hybrid. The electric and hybrid car markets are expanding, and now you can even get hybrid 4WD’s. Obviously not practical if you’re happy with your current car, but if you’re in the market, check it out. Compare gas mileage and make an informed decision.
21. Buy secondhand and thrift. It’s cheap and you can find some great deals and gorgeous things. Need I say more?
22. On the same note, regularly donate anything you don’t need instead of throwing it away.
23. Try reusable menstrual management. Reusable cloth pads and period cups are a lot better than they sound. I was a skeptic, but after switching to a cup, I’ll never look back. Not only am I saving money, but I’m also saving an estimated 437 tampons per year.
24. Recycle clothing hangers. Many clothing hangers aren’t actually recyclable, but as it turns out, some dry cleaners will gladly take your old hangers to use.
25. Reduce your junk mail. Get bank statements emailed to you instead of mailed, and contact any junk mail services to tell them you no longer want their mail. Unsubscribe from mailing lists.
26. Get rechargeable batteries. While we’re at it, did you know there are battery rechargers that can recharge non-rechargeables? Life. Changing.
27. Don’t run the dryer, washing machine, or dishwasher unless it’s full.
28. Replace all your bulbs with energy efficient LEDs.
29. Maintain your car. If, like me, you do have to regularly drive a non-electric car, you could be wasting a considerable amount of fuel due to your car not being maintained.
30. Reduce the weight of your car. I know it sounds stupid, but added weight really does change your fuel efficiency. I’m not suggesting you rip out your spare tire and back seats, but you should remove roof racks or storage pods when you’re not using them.
31. Use both sides of a piece of paper when printing or taking notes.
32. Wash your laundry in cold water when possible. Unless your garment tag specifically advises against it, your fancy blouse can probably be washed cold.
33. Use matches instead of lighters. The wood of a match will degrade long before that plastic BIC.
34. Dim your screen and turn off data when it’s not needed. You’ll save on your phone or laptop’s battery usage, and in turn, need to charge them less.
35. Put less on your plate and go back for seconds when needed. No, this isn’t a diet tip. Approximately a third of what Americans put on their plate will go in the garbage. Put less on your plate, and only go back for more if you’re still hungry. Put leftovers in an airtight container and eat them the next day.
36. Ease off on your heating and AC. There’s no shame in wearing jackets around the house, but even if you’re not that extreme, you could save a lot of energy by changing the temperature by just 1 degree.
37. Buy paper stick cotton tips (Q-tips) instead of ones with plastic sticks.
38. Eat more raw foods. This will either reduce your propane or electricity usage, depending on your oven or stove.
39. See some trash on the sidewalk? Pick it up.
40. Check your home for drafts and air leaks. It will make your heating and cooling system more efficient.
I know these all sound like small or useless things, but if we all take a few seconds and try out a few of these methods, it will make a difference. Every bit helps.

Best Travel Equipment For a Newborn Baby | Mindandmom
The right Travel Equipment For Newborn babies can make traveling with an infant a breeze. Being able to feed, pacify, change, clean and keep the baby comfortable on the go can look daunting, but luckily this art has been mastered by “power parents” and product companies over the years, and we can take full advantage of these innovations.
Here’s a list of travel must-haves to make traveling with the little one an enjoyable experience for the baby as well as for parents. Pregnancy guide
Travel stroller
The foldable umbrella stroller is a common choice to throw in the back of a car. They have minimal cushioning, usually have tiny canopies, and are made to be as lightweight and portable as possible.
Travel strollers. These are slightly bigger than umbrella strollers but still fit in an airplane overhead bin and are much lighter than traditional full-size strollers. These usually have better canopies and cushioning compared to umbrella strollers, They sometimes come with cup-holders and a storage basket too.
You want to pick the stroller-type between these two types according to your mode of travel and space. It may be worth owning one of each type – in addition to a full-size stroller for use at home – to use based on the type of vehicle and distance you’re going to travel. Whichever type you pick, pay attention to these factors:
How lightweight the stroller is
How easily it folds
How far it collapses (partially vs completely)
Whether it has ample sun protection/canopy
Whether it comes with a carrying case
Stroller bag A stroller bag can be a lifesaver when you travel. If you are flying, you can check it in or carry it with you. A few things to look out for when choosing a stroller bag:
Make sure it has back or shoulder straps like a backpack for easy carry
Check if it is waterproof, to be weather-ready
Ensure it has a wide opening to make it quick and easy to put the stroller in
Double stitching helps keep it durable
Some bags come with wheels, for easier use at airports and walkways
Stroller fan There is no telling when the weather can get extreme when you are traveling. It is as important to be prepared for high temperatures as it is to be prepared for rain. A battery-powered stroller fan will go a long way in keeping your little one cool as you walk through a zoo or go shopping in your destination. A few things to look out for when choosing a stroller fan:
See if the fan has a decibel rating. You want to buy a quiet fan if possible, to help the baby sleep better.
Look at the battery size. A powerful lithium-ion battery with a USB charger will ensure you can reuse your phone or laptop battery charger.
Some models come with clips and some with wraparound type holds to attach the fan to your stroller. The latter is flexible and lends itself to more sizes and shapes of surfaces, but clips are fine too.
Some fans come with LED lights, which could be handy in odd situations when there is a power outage or unexpected outdoor low-light settings.
Some models even come with aroma diffusers, that you can use for filling up mosquito repellent.
Stroller clips These are small but useful. You never know when you need to clip a bunch of clothes or a jacket or umbrella to the stroller. Having a few clips with you on the go can be a lifesaver for changing or feeding the baby on the go.
Baby carrier Baby carriers are a must-have in a parent’s arsenal of travel gear. Here’s why:
Sometimes you need your hands free to do stuff while carrying junior around
More body contact. According to research, babies who are carried three hours a day cry 43% less.
Much easier to navigate crowds and get to places quickly
Factors to keep in mind when choosing a carrier:
Fit and comfort: Ideally the carrier should fit the baby in a neat M-shape posture, this is good for the baby’s hip health.
Material: Breathable mesh material is preferable to keep the baby cooler whereas if you live mostly in cool climes, you may prefer a carrier with heavy knitting and padding.
Washable: Not all carriers are machine washable
Travel car seat A travel car seat is a must-have for safe travels with your baby if you are planning to go anywhere by car at all, including that taxi drive home. There are many travel car seats on the market on every budget. A few factors to look at when choosing a travel car seat:
LATCH installation system – modern cars come equipped with this type of installation that is more secure than just a seatbelt installation.
Weight and dimensions: You want one that easily fits into a car-seat backpack or bag, for easy carry
Convert to a stroller – yes, some travel car seats convert to a travel stroller, so you don’t have to carry both! But these tend to be expensive, so you want to choose wisely.
Travel car seat backpack Yes, you need one! Here’s why:
In places where you are not allowed to carry a car seat with you (like some airlines), your car seat can become a checked bag!
Protects your car seat from dings – especially the wheels that break easily
Easy carry to and from a taxi
Factors to watch for when choosing a travel car-seat backpack:
Material: Ideally, a durable bag with waterproof material will come in handy
Sturdy shoulder straps
Dimensions: Make sure the backpack fits your car seat’s dimensions
Weight: Some of these bags can get heavy! Ideally, you want something lightweight while still being durable.
Wheels: Some backpacks come with wheels and some don’t. Wheels can be handy especially at airports and train stations.
Travel crib You may not need a travel crib, but they can be handy. These usually come with thick and comfortable mattresses and can make the difference between your baby getting a good night’s sleep or not, at the travel destination. These can also be a lifesaver in case the hotel you stay in ends up having bedbugs. They usually collapse or disassemble easily. We would suggest taking these, especially on road trips if you have the extra trunk space in the car. Factors to look at when choosing a travel crib:
How lightweight it is
How easy it is to assemble or fold
The softness of the mattress
Sleepsack Sleepsacks or sleeping bags for your newborn are a nice to have. Some babies have trouble sleeping well in unfamiliar surroundings, and the sort and familiar smell and feel of their sleeping bags can help make them feel at ease. A couple of factors to pay attention to when choosing a sleeping bag for your baby:
Material. These usually come in cotton and synthetic. Cotton can be a better choice for softness. Some come with thick, mattress-like padding.
Ease of washing: Not all are machine washable
Ease of use: The easiest to use typically have zippers, but wraparound types are fine too.
Diaper bag A portable diaper bag can be a lifesaver on an airplane or public charging, station, or even in a car. There are a few different types of diaper bags:
Backpack diaper bags
Stroller attachment bags
Handbag-style diaper bags
A few factors to look at when choosing a diaper bag:
Size, dimensions and weight: For travel, you want one that is small enough to carry around easily and attach to a stroller while carrying enough stuff.
Included changing pad: Some diaper bags have these, and this is a must-have feature for travel.
Blankets Travel blankets are at the top of the list of travel must-haves for a baby. When changing, feeding, sleeping, or just cooing and saying hi to the world… babies love blankets! Blankets can double as sleep-sacks too. There are a few different types, with different advantages:
Swaddle blankets: These usually have thick and soft padding. Muslin is a good choice for this type.
Cotton blankets: A great choice all-around, generally friendly to most babies’ skin, and easy to wash.
Fleece blankets for cool weather, the inside of an airplane, or an air-conditioned car.
Sanitizing wipes Baby wipes are a staple in your travel kit. A few factors to look at:
Ingredients: You want to avoid wipes with any possibly allergic chemicals
Thickness: Generally, thicker wipes are more effective at cleaning
Size: You don’t want them too big for travel, and don’t pack too many. Buy as needed at your destination, but always have some handy.
Extra baby clothes Travel wisdom generally says NOT to pack too many clothes for lighter travel, but babies tend to be messy. You don’t want to spend the better part of your trip washing clothes, so pack a couple of extra sets of baby clothes that you think you will need. A few types of clothes you want to carry:
Rompers
Bodysuits
Pants
Sleepers
Hats
Socks
Swaddles
Battery-operated pump These can be convenient for lactating mothers on the go. A few types and factors to look at when choosing a breast pump to carry with you:
Charging system: Some come with AC adapters that use a car’s cigarette lighter / 12-volt socket. A USB socket is great too, as it would allow you to use your phone or laptop charger.
Pumping time: Typically varies between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how long you need to use.
Size and dimensions
Wet bags Wet bags are an important diaper accessory. There is no telling when there will be a mess. At some point, something will spill. A wet bag is designed to contain the smell of used diapers, so you always want to have a few of these handy. A few factors to look at when choosing wet bags:
Material: Polyurethane Laminate or Thermoplastic Polyurethane bags are both designed to keep smells well contained.
Reusable vs disposable wet bags: Disposable ones are more convenient but more expensive as they need to be replaced
Size and dimensions
Bottles When traveling, you want bottles that are small and lightweight. You also want to carry a bottle-warmer, to use restaurant milk in a pinch.
Baby first-aid kit A baby first-aid kit for travel is a must-have for well-prepared parents. Make sure it includes:
A baby thermometer
Baby Tylenol
Bandaids/plasters
Steriwipes
Anti-diarrhoea medication
Baby cream / lotion
White noise machine This can make a world of difference if the baby has trouble adjusting to a new environment and falling asleep. Some babies respond well to white noise in such situations, especially as they get more used to sleeping with white noise. Factors to look for when choosing a portable white noise machine:
Sound selection
Timer
Charging system: AC adapter or disposable batteries
Size / portability
Automatic shutoff
Night light (nice to have)
Travel baby monitor A portable baby monitor can be especially useful if you happen to travel to a place the baby is not used to, to be able to track their sleep and vitals. This is especially so if you and the baby may have to sleep in different rooms. A few factors to look at when choosing a portable baby monitor:
Audio-only monitors are cheap and portable
Pay attention to range and sound quality when it comes to audio
Video monitors are generally more expensive and come with camera features such as pan, tilt, and zoom.
Travel toys Having travel toys at hand can make the difference between the trip being enjoyable or just engaged keeping the baby entertained. A few types of toys can help keep a newborn engaged:
Rattle style toys – these are the classic, ancient baby toy and always work
Soft toys and bath toys especially for babies 6+ months old
Pacifiers and teethers

I decided today would be a good day to clean out my book bag (or am I just procrastinating editing a paper that’s due tomorrow?), so if you’re into it...
What’s In My Bag Challenge!
I’ve never done this before. I took pictures of everything I found in my bag, so I’m just going to include, like, literally everything I found. Since I’ve actually never cleaned out this book bag in the 3 years I’ve used it for college. PS I’m organizing this post by the different pockets of my bag (there are 5), I’ll explain what I found, and provide pictures below each description with the appropriate items in the picture. Let the fun begin!
Laptop Sleeve: My laptop is the only thing in my laptop sleeve, unless I need my charger for it then I’ll shove that in there as well. It’s a MacBook Air, and I got the case for it off of Amazon. It’s a hardcover case, not a sleeve type of thing. I’m just now realizing that’s kind of a crappy picture, so apologies.
Tiny Pocket (a random shallow pocket probably meant as a built-in pencil case or something (now that I think about it maybe I should use that as a pencil case omg)): This is where I’ve started keeping my post-it notes, since the pocket is shallow and not much else fits in there (something money) so the post-its don’t get crushed or bent or something. I tried to buy pastel colored post-its at Target, and this is as close as I could get. Part of me was really into the studyblr aesthetic of Pastel Everything, but another part of me just prefers the pale colors because it’s easier to read the writing on them. Also I love pastels.
Main Pocket: This is the magical place where I keep all of my books, notebooks, homework, etc. First, I pulled out this scene v. summary exercise I had to do for my nonfiction writing class today.
Then I pulled out my grey dotted Leuchtturm writing journal (which I’m LOVING by the way).
After that are 3 of my textbooks, one for my nonfiction writing class and 2 for my critical writing about literature course. I won’t go into the long titles of each textbook here, but if you’re super curious about what books these are feel free to shoot me an ask or private message me.
And finally (from this pocket) we have my super basic 3 subject black spiral notebook for notes in 3/4 of my classes (my nonfiction class consists of me taking notes in my writing journal and scribbling notes inside my textbook), and we have a course packet for my critical writing about literature course. This just contains a bunch of readings we have to do that require us to annotate the heck out of, so our professor developed her own course packet with the readings inside so we don’t have to run around finding a printer every other day of the week.
4th Pocket (because I can’t think of an identifying name for it): In this pocket we have four things. First, we have a tiny little coin purse that actually has change in it and I’m a little shook (yes it’s my money but I’m a broke college student and it’s money I didn’t know I had so win). Below that, yes, that is a flask. No, it does not have anything in it. No, I do not have it in my bag for those stressful days full of classes where I feel like I just need a drink. I actually purchased this last November(?) when I was visiting my boyfriend and we wanted to go tailgating before the football game and...yeah. I’ll let you fill in the blanks. Or just ask me about it if you’re curious, hopefully I won’t get in trouble LOL. Anyway, to take it back home with me I stuffed it in this pocket of my bag and forgot about it. It’s chrome and changes color in the sun between green purple and blue and I love it a lot. The notebook is full of letters to my boyfriend. Last year I started writing to him in a notebook because it would calm me down. My boyfriend has a habit of trying to fix all of my problems, even if he can’t (cough cough depression and anxiety) so I made it a habit to write to him when I really needed to talk about something at length and knew he would just want to fix it or not know what to say. The plan was to fill it, but I haven’t written in it since before last summer, which I consider a good thing actually. Lastly we have that book, which I just found at home and brought back to school with me. We talked about both of these stories in a class last week and I remembered reading them and wanted to read them again, and I didn’t even realize I owned the book until last weekend! So I packed it and I want to read and annotate it when I find time.
Front and Final Pocket: Honestly this pocket just has a bunch of crap in it. But I’ll go through it all anyway. Here, we have my cheaters. I’m convinced I need glasses, but the last time I got my eyes checked they told me I don’t need glasses (and couldn’t help me with the problem I’ve been having, which is so irritating). I got cheaters and without going into full-on detail and making this post longer than it already is, they helped me a lot.
Here we have a tiny little binder clip that says “Reminder” and an old receipt from when I bought some books at the bookstore. There’s a folded post-it note with a shopping list on it, 3 business cards from people I worked with last summer at my internship, melt-aways for headaches because I can’t take pills, some tissues (not used I swear), some random little tiny black plastic things that came with my wireless earbuds I think, and my iPhone earbuds with the adapter plugged into it since I have the 7.
Here you can see my cheaters peaking in at the top corner haha sorry. I have an old receipt at the top, and MORE of those little black plastic things (WTF). A crushed box full of band-aids, a pair of gloves, a foldable ruler, and the bottom handle part of an umbrella (the rest of the umbrella is missing).
A bunch of pens and a pencil and a highlighter, blank notecards I didn’t know I had and another thing of post-its! The deal with these colored pens is that last semester I bought them and they worked great in the beginning. Flawlessly. I tried using them this semester, and they’re jumpy now. I’m not sure if I just used them all up, but I don’t think I did because I only used a couple of the colors and this semester I tried using the ones I hadn’t used as much last semester and they were acting jumpy. So idk what that’s about, I’ll be throwing those away though. Maybe I’ll try a new pack. That black pen is my favorite, I use that to write in my writing journal and sometimes to annotate and to take notes in class. That purple pen (with the cap) is what I use to annotate along with that purple highlighter. I like my highlighters to match my pens when I annotate, and all my other highlighters were too bright or too dark. This purple is pale enough to not be overwhelming on the eyes and the purple pen matches great. And I just found that pencil, I’ve been wondering where it was, so now yay I have a pencil. Great timing since I have an exam next Friday.
Lastly, we have these 3 things. The bottom left corner are 2 notecards I used to test pens for you guys last semester, some of the pens above actually. These last two items are pretty special to me. First, the card on the top is the thank-you card my boyfriend wrote my family after his graduation from high school. We gave him some pretty awesome gifts (ask if you’re curious, won’t go into it now) and he sent that thank-you. We had it hanging up on our fridge for a year and finally I decided to take it and keep it with me all the time because I think it’s really sweet. If you can’t read it here, feel free to ask what it says I’m more than happy to share. The blank square of paper on the bottom right is a birthday letter he wrote me last year. I kept it folded up because I’d like to keep it as a special thing between the two of us for now, but he’s just really special and I like to keep some of these things with me all the time.
So there you have it! Sorry that this is so long, I tend to ramble a lot. Aside from the obvious trash, I’m probably going to keep most of the stuff in this post, just maybe now in my book bag. If you have questions about anything you see feel free to ask, I’m a pretty open book and I like my followers to feel like they can get to know me. Now I guess I should stop procrastinating and start editing that paper...

DJI Mavic 2 Pro: Review
DJI Mavic 2 Pro; DJI's Mavic family has all but replaced its Phantom series for consumer drone use. Mavic drones are smaller throughout, and foldable for easier storage and transport. The top-end model, the Mavic 2 Pro ($1,729), has the biggest image sensor we've observed in a drone this size. Which means images and video both look much better than other drones, like the Pro's near twin sibling, the Mavic 2 Zoom.
The Pro is a bit more expensive, by $250, but we think the upgrade in image and quality may be worth the added cost. The Mavic 2 Pro is the greatest drone for enthusiast pilots, and our Editors'Choice. Editors' Note: The price of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro reduced from $1,729 to $1,599 in 2020. amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit0"; amzn_assoc_search_bar = "true"; amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "odu05-20"; amzn_assoc_search_bar_position = "bottom"; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "search"; amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "US"; amzn_assoc_title = "Shop Related Products"; amzn_assoc_default_search_phrase = "dji mavic pro 2"; amzn_assoc_default_category = "All"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "8de64b15379846bf66a5bb3f87784e56"; The Best Folding Drone The DJI Mavic 2 Pro takes its design cues from the original Mavic Pro, but is really a little bigger all around. It measures 3.3 by 3.6 by 8.4 inches (HWD) folded and 3.3 by 9.5 by 12.7 inches with it arms extended. Unfolding the drone is pretty easy, you have to make sure to swing the leading arms out before the underside ones. The aircraft weighs about 2 pounds, heavy enough to require FAA registration when flying recreationally in the US.
Despite being truly a bit bigger compared to the original Mavic and the more recent Mavic Air, the Mavic 2 Pro remains quite portable. It fits nicely in a camera bag, taking on a comparable space as a normal 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens. You will have to create a bit more space for the handy remote control, charger, and any extra batteries you get, however you won't need to dedicate a backpack to the Mavic as you do with the Phantom design. DJI is splitting the Mavic 2 line into two models—the Pro, which we're reviewing here—and the Zoom, that includes a 2x optical contact, but a smartphone-sized 1/2.3-inch, 12MP image sensor. Dji Mavic 2 Pro leaps ahead with a 1-inch sensor, about four times how big the imager behind the Mavic 2 Zoom's lens. The more bigger area enables more image resolution (20MP), and higher-quality video. The included handheld remote control resembles what you get with other Mavic models. It's gray, with a brief, changeable cable to connect to your smartphone, which mounts below the controller. Two clips hold your phone—they're big enough to allow for a tablet and are designed for a slender phone case, but you will need to take your phone out of its case if you use a large one. There's a cutout on the left clip, to help you access your phone's home button while it's mounted in the remote. Cables are included for phones that use Lightning, micro USB, and USB-C ports.
The remote features a monochrome display—it shows battery status, telemetry data, and other information. It's possible to fly the Mavic 2 with no phone attached, but you may need an Android or iOS device and the DJI Go 4 app to activate the drone before your first flight. We don't recommend flying with no phone, though, as you won't get to see the view through the camera without one. As well as the flight sticks—which are removable for storage—the remote includes dual control wheels and buttons at the shoulders. The left wheel tilts the camera up and down, while the right brightens or darkens the exposure, and the buttons are accustomed to snap a photo or begin a video. The remote also features a switch to alter flight modes on its side, a separate button to activate the Mavic's return-to-home feature, and a Pause button to freeze the drone in place. There's also a tiny four-way controller—it may be used to point the camera straight ahead or straight down. Two programmable control buttons, on the rear, round things out. The Mavic 2 Pro is rated for 31 minutes of flight on a complete battery charge. That number is on the basis of the timeframe the drone can hover set up, so expect a couple of minutes less life in reality. Our tests netted on average 27 minutes—that's still a lot of time in the air, better compared to the 23 minutes the initial Mavic Pro netted during our flights. You would expect a $1,500 drone to add an obstacle avoidance system, and the Mavic 2 doesn't disappoint. It's sensors in all direction. In many flight modes the forward, rear, upward, and downward sensors are active all the time, stopping the drone set up if an obstacle is detected. Switching to ActiveTrack, where in fact the Mavic identifies and tracks a moving subject, enables the medial side sensors. In addition they work in Tripod mode, a low-speed setting that lets photographers move the drone very slowly to raised frame shots. The Mavic 2 also includes a high-speed Sport setting. It ups the most flight speed from around 32mph to just shy of 45mph. All obstacle sensors are disabled when Sport is switched on, so utilize it with care. DJI has begun to include internal storage to its drones—we first found it with the Mavic Air. The Mavic 2 Pro matches the Air's 8GB capacity, and includes a microSD card slot too. The card slot is essential, as 8GB isn't room enough to put up plenty of video. The Mavic 2 shoots 4K footage at 100Mbps, so you will end up restricted to only a little less than 15 minutes of footage in internal memory. I'd have like see at the very least 16GB added to a design that calls itself Pro. Still, memory cards aren't expensive, and having some internal storage means you won't be left in the cold in the event that you forget to pack a card. DJI Go 4 App and Features
Much like other DJI drones, the Mavic 2 Pro works together the DJI Go 4 app, available as a totally free download for Android and iOS devices. The app does plenty of things, but most of all it offers you control on the drone's camera and shows its perspective at 1080p quality. In addition it shows a chart of the planet, inlaid in the video feed, which you may swap to if you want to ascertain the Mavic's position in relative to you. The app can also be where you go to get into automated shots, or enter in to a special capture mode, like Hyperlapse. Essentially a time-lapse with motion, Hyperlapse is just a fun way to fully capture sped-up views of the world. I'm not really a big fan of how DJI has implemented the knowledge, though—the remote makes a clicking noise everytime the drone adds a frame, and the flight speed is slowed up a bit. Your mileage can vary, but I'd certainly choose to see a clean view from the camera, without audible distractions, like you receive with the Hyperlapse mode on the less expensive Parrot Anafi.
As well as Hyperlapse, there are many of other automated flight modes and options. They include Asteroid, which mixes panoramic imaging and video to show a standard view of the entire world in to a Little Planet projection, which we first saw with the Mavic Air. Additionally it supports TapFly, which enables you to fly the drone by tapping your phone's screen, ActiveTrack, and APAS. The latter—the Advanced Pilot Awareness System—is helpful for flights when you find so many obstacles to navigate around. It will slow the drone down, however when enabled it automatically flies around any obstacles it encounters.
The app even offers some safety features. It works together with the drone's GPS to enforce no-fly zones, such as the permanent one across the White House and temporary bans of drones around areas where aerial firefighting is happening, both of which could help keep you out of trouble. When you have an FAA Part 107 commercial license, you can even utilize the app to authorize flights near airports, helping you save the problem of contacting the control tower directly. Firmware updates, which may be frequent with DJI products, are done using the app.
DJI Mavic Pro 2 Superlative Video and Images
The DJI Mavic Pro 2 delivers the best drone footage and images you will get in a tight form factor. To raised it, you will need to take into account moving up to big, expensive aircraft by having an SLR-sized sensor and changeable lenses, like the DJI Inspire 2. The main reason its footage is crisper than other 4K drones may be the sensor size. Most drones make use of a 1/2.3-inch sensor, similar to what you get with a smartphone. However the Mavic 2 Pro works on the 1-inch imager, about four times big is what you get with the Mavic 2 Zoom, Mavic Air, and other folding drones. It's not the first time DJI has used the sensor size in a drone—additionally it is for sale in the larger Phantom 4 Pro and Phantom 4 Advanced models. They're both still available and do offer some advantages—notably support for the wider 4K DCI format. But when you're fine with UHD, you will find the Mavic to incorporate a lot of DJI's more recent innovations—including better made automated shots and APAS—that aren't for sale in the Phantom series. What you do get is 4K UHD footage at 100Mbps, with picking a H.264 or H.265 compression. You are able to shoot ready-to-edit footage with a regular color frame—DJI has leveraged color science tech from its partner Hasselblad for the Mavic 2 Pro's camera. Our test footage was all shot with the default color profile. You can also choose an alternative, baked-in profile if you want your video to really have a more artistic, filtered look, or you want to shoot with the flat, low-contrast Dlog-M profile. Shooting flat offers you more power to color correct—Dlog-M is a 10-bit format. It's only recommended for serious video pros, however, as you will be needing both software and skill to create Dlog-M footage pop. In addition it supports HDR video, utilizing the Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) profile.
You will find numerous frame rates available. For 4K you obtain 24, 25, or 30fps. Dropping resolution to 2.7K adds 48, 50, and 60fps, and you obtain all the aforementioned at 1080p (2K), with the addition of 120fps. The lens includes a variable aperture, configurable from f/2.8 through f/11, and the sensor can range between ISO 100 to 6400 for video. You'll probably want to incorporate a basic density filter for flights in bright light—I don't recommend using the lens at a location narrower than f/5.6 to minimize the resolution loss brought on by diffraction—but when you're without one, you are can certainly stop down further to keep proper shutter angles for the footage. Additionally, there are two angles of view to select when shooting at 4K. DJI doesn't do a good job identifying them in the app, which is a shame as it effectively provides Mavic 2's camera an identical coverage range whilst the Mavic 2 Zoom for 4K video. The default setting, FOV, is a wide-angle view of the entire world, about 28mm in full-frame terms. Switching to the HQ (High Quality) setting narrows the camera's angle a bit—it's nearer to 40mm. That you do not get quite exactly the same range whilst the Mavic 2 Zoom's camera (24-48mm), but it's close enough. You do lose the capability to execute a dolly zoom shot, but it appears as though a good price to cover better video overall. Imaging can also be quite versatile. We have seen the 1-inch sensor size find a place in compact cameras, where it delivers better results than you are able to expect from your own smartphone. The Mavic 2 Pro shoots images in JPG or Raw DNG format, and I would expect most serious photographers to utilize the latter. The big sensor makes low-light aerial imaging a less strenuous task, by having an ISO that may be set as high as 12800 when creating images. I often recommend ISO 3200 as a maximum for this sort of sensor, however, that will still net some stunning twilight photos.
The Best Small Drone
Will there be a far more capable folding drone compared to the DJI Mavic 2 Pro? I don't think so. It is small enough to get space along your terrestrial imaging and video equipment in a backpack, nonetheless it does not make plenty of sacrifices in comparison to larger drones. Assuming that you do not have to shoot footage destined for projection in a theatre, the 4K UHD format (the one utilized by your TV) is plenty of for almost any project destined to be considered in a Tv room. Couple the quality with the capability to record footage at dual angles of view, excellent still imaging, and the incredible stabilization delivered by the Mavic 2's gimbal stabilization, and you have got a drone that is simple to love. Yes, you spend a higher cost, however the Mavic 2 Pro is the better folding drone we have flown, so it is our Editors'Choice of drone. A must have! Read the full article

HOW TO TRAVEL WITH CATS?
25 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH CATS
1. confirm they need A MICROCHIP We adopted our two orange tabby boys from a shelter so that they have already been chipped. If yours doesn’t, confirm you get one implanted. We already had a scare on day one among our trip where one among them ran out of the car into the woods. If somebody else were to possess found him and took him to a vet, they might have our contact info. A collar with a telephone number tag also helps, but our cats have breakaway collars that they often get out of.
2. START WITH SHORT RIDES This will get your cat won't to all the new sensations of riding within the car. You’ll also determine how he/she handles travel and whether motion sickness is going to be a problem. Some cats even get hyperactive (they’ll be everywhere the place), which may make it difficult and dangerous for you.
3. START WITH A CRATE Our cats don’t enjoy the tiny spaces (they cry a lot!), but it's an honest thanks to starting. Cats typically feel easier during space they're conversant in. Some people believe that cats should be during a crate during a car for his or her safety. Ours tend to act more like dogs and wish to roam a touch with wind on their faces. For our very first car ride, though, I allow them to sit on my lap.
4. ask YOUR VET Depending on how your cat handles being on the road, your vet could also be ready to help. Though we probably wouldn’t sedate our cats (and luckily we didn’t need to), some may suggest you sedate them or give them medication for kinetosis. There also are pheromone sprays to assist calm your cat in stressful situations.
5. PLAN PIT STOPS Give your cat an opportunity every 2-3 hours. It’s also an honest time to allow them to use the litter without the car traveling.
6. PACK EXTRA SUPPLIES You never know where you’ll be and you don’t want to be stuck somewhere without supplies you would like for your cat. Also, pack extra portions for any special food or medicines your cat will need.
7. FEED YOUR CAT EARLY Give your cat 3-4 hours to let their food settle before hitting the road. Otherwise, you'll get a gift during your drive.
8. KEEP THEM HYDRATED. Make sure you've got water for your cat along the way. We wish to use this collapsible camping cup for his or her water, both within the car and within the trailer since it packs away nicely.
9. REWARD THEM Have treats handy so you'll allow them to know they're doing an honest job. a bit like any behavior, giving them treats helps reinforce positive behavior. you'll not think it’s possible to coach a cat, but ours can sit, shake, and we’re within the process of leash training them.
10. PET-FRIENDLY HOTELS If you or your pets need an opportunity from the road, search for pet-friendly hotels. There are more of them out there than you think! confirm your call and ask if they permit both dogs and cats.
THINGS which will MAKE TRAVELING together with your CATS EASIER 11. PUPPY PADS These are great for any accidents they could have within the car. If it’s been a short time, we sometimes forget certain minute behaviors they exhibit once they need something. We’ve had a couple of times where they got sick and got diarrhea or threw up everywhere the car. Now we always keep some puppy pads handy. We’ll place them under their sitting areas and also stash several of them near the front so we will grab them once they get sick.
12. EXTRA TRASH BAGS You need to stay around extra trash bags for an equivalent reason as above. You never know when they’ll have an accident. We wish to devour the doggie poop bags available at the most rest areas.
13. U-PET We mostly use this to move them to the vet and therefore the vets love this thing! once we move them from the trailer to the car and the other way around, we just carry them in our arms, but otherwise, we transport them with the U-pet. We’ve taken Mika on shorter hikes, but we’re hoping to require him on some longer ones. We’ll allow you to skills it goes!
Tips for Traveling with Cats // localadventurer.comTips for Traveling with Cats // localadventurer.com 14. THUNDER SHIRT Mika isn’t bothered by car rides or changing environments. the sole thing he hates is being confined during a small space. With Sebastian, not so much! During our trip, we picked up a Thunder Shirt. He felt immobilized initially (it was hilarious and cute) but eventually got won't have a cozy shirt around him. We usually put it on him right before our drives to our next camping spot.
Tips for Traveling Long Distance with Cats // localadventurer.com 15. HARNESS + LEASH For us, the limited space just meant we spent the maximum amount of time as possible outdoors. For the cats, it meant that once they got hyper, they’d run back and forth 23 ft at a time. That’s one of The explanations why we wanted to leash train them so that they might also spend time outdoors too. If you’re trying to leash train your cats, get a harness that matches snug around the neck and chest (you should be ready to fit two of your fingers within the neck portion). a number of them work better than others. With the primary one we bought, one night, Sebastian popped out of it and saw the woods. We were checking out him within the dark for half an hour and thought we lost him! this is often the one we currently use, and it's worked the simplest for us. We still need to monitor them carefully, since cats are slippery and may manage to back out of things. Mika is more easily manageable, but on Sebastian, we use the harness and therefore the thunder shirt over the harness. He’s not getting out of both.
Tips for Traveling with Cats // localadventurer.com 16. FELINE PINE Since we are in such a small space, we decided to vary from our usual clumping litter to pine. It masks the odor far better and doesn’t get everywhere the floors. They still get pine out of their box, but it’s much easier to select up. We usually put their litter box right by the door, so that we will sweep it up right there.
17. PORTABLE LITTER BOX / OUR MAKESHIFT LITTER BOX Instead of buying a litter box, we decided to shop for an enormous plastic container with a lid. This has worked best for us since we are transporting it from the trailer to the car almost every other day. We’ve been traveling a lot! If you are feeling just like the box needs replacing, it’s also really affordable. thus far ours has lasted 2 months, and it doesn’t get to get replaced yet. Also, the lid helps trap the odor inside after they are doing their deed on a car ride. We even considered getting this disposable one that lasts fortnight (has anyone tried these yet? does one like it?).
18. FOLDABLE CUP We use these for his or her water (and food for the car). It folds into itself, and you'll pack them away easily. space for storing is restricted, so anything that compresses into something smaller is great! we've got an Airstream tray that we use for his or her food, but if we didn’t have that, we might have picked up an outsized collapsible bowl to use for his or her food.
19. FURMINATOR Our cats shed a lot! Especially within the heat. It wasn’t as noticeable during a larger space, but in an RV or car, you want to stop the maximum amount of the shedding as possible. We fulminate them once every week to stay the fur around our place minimized. If they’re home and we’re close to taking them on an extended trip, we confirm we terminate them before we go too.
20. POOP SCOOP This is a requirement for cats during any scenario (unless you’re lucky enough to bathroom train them – we were halfway there once we lived in a house with quite one bathroom). We picked up an inexpensive one and velcroed a Ziploc bag to the side of our litter box where we keep it.
21. DUST PAN + BRUSH We bought two sets, one for the trailer and one for the car. We use it a day to comb up any of the litter that gets of our the box and it helps to wash up the other dust or particles too.
22. WATERLESS CAT BATH FOAM Not sure how you are doing it, but we've never been ready to give our cats a correct bath without being clawed at. Most healthy indoor cats can keep themselves clean and don’t require a shower, but our boys wish to get messy! Some people say it'd be their dog-like personalities that also make them care less about their hygiene. once we fulminate them once every week, we also use the waterless bath foam on them too. they appear to love this far better than the spray.
23. LINT ROLLER Unless you don’t mind being covered in fur (why is it whenever you wear black they need to be extra affectionate?), you ought to probably get a lint roller. If you’re a pet owner, I’m guessing you have already got one. :)
24. FLEA MEDS If you are doing allow your cats out, make certain they need their flea meds! For now, we allow them to enjoy the outside from our trailer window, but we are still hoping to completely leash train them both!
25. DRAMAMINE OR PRESCRIPTION kinetosis MEDICATION Mika doesn’t mind rides within the car, but once we started driving on mountainous and curvy roads, it gave him motion sickness. We tried Dramamine and got another prescription drug to undertake from a vet, but neither worked. We attempt to let him sit on the middle console so he can anticipate, but he always insists on searching the edges and at the bottom. Such a stubborn cat (Jacob likes to joke that he gets that from me)! Hopefully, we’ll be out of the mountains soon for his sake! thus far, we haven’t found out the simplest solution for this.

Grocery shopping and shopping bags
A little bit about me: I grew up in the suburbs, where it was common for everyone to have a car, pull up to a grocery store, use shopping carts (or occasionally, small handheld baskets) to carry items around the store, and then either roll the cart out to a car at the end of the shopping trip, put your items in your car, and then (ideally, HOPEFULLY) neatly return your cart to a little corral that took up one or two parking spaces throughout the parking lot. All of the grocery stores or supermarkets I grew up with only had one floor, because there was more than enough land to expand horizontally rather than vertically. (I didn't see my first escalator within a Target until I was 19, which was in the heart of Chicago)
Some immediate things I noticed from the shopping/walking around I've done at Carrefour (with the larger store about 10 minutes from campus, the the Carrefour at Part-Dieu, Confluence, and then one in a shopping center in Nice as well):
Bags are bigger here, both the plastic ones as well as the reusable ones made of slightly heavier material. The plastic ones even seem to be made of more durable material (think the kind of plastic you'd receive from a bag when shopping at a store like H&M, rather than the almost transparent bags you'd find at Target or stuck on a tree along the interstate). If you've ever been to an IKEA and know what I mean when I say "those blue IKEA bags", the reusable ones are about that large.
In fact, I think most students have used the reusable shopping bags in lieu of a dedicated laundry bag. These mesh bags, or even just foldable hampers, were one of those quintessential college student items that I just assumed was a universal constant. With reusable bags this large, it makes sense that maybe these students wouldn't feel the need to go out and buy some other container just for their clothes. (The little white mesh bag on the left-hand side of the photo is my laundry.)
There are so many different kinds of carts! I had written a bit earlier about this, but now that I've visited several other grocery stores (and as a result, seen several other types of carts), I wanted to talk about this again. The store near campus has almost "suitcase-like" carts, a tall basket with two weeks on one side and a handle that extends so you can pull the whole thing behind you. There are others that have larger shopping carts, with a small coin/token deposit you use to unlock the cart but also to, seemingly, incentivize you to neatly line up the carts when you're done--you can only get your coin back if you stow the cart away in a line with all of the other carts at the entrance to the store, because the "key" to unlock your deposit would only be available from another cart (I believe you could use the key from your own cart, but I guess shopping cart anarchy doesn't run rampant here.)
There was also one style I saw in Nice that looked like these:
Except the cart didn't have the wire baskets, and instead, you'd a hand basket on the top and/or bottom. To me, this seemed like a really convenient way to carry two basket-worth of stuff, you weren't taking up an entire aisle by carrying your baskets in your arms, and this little fella would also be easier to maneuver than a larger cart. (I'm admittedly not sure if these also had a tiny coin deposit, but maybe they do!)

Not a replacement for expert veterinary assistance.
Cages (additionally called crates, kennels, playpens, or pens) can be a real life-saver if your cat is recouping from ailment or injury, or when you are presenting a new cat or kitties into your house. Cat cages can additionally be a short-term option to shield your cat from household risks throughout a home repair project.
When taking on rescue pet cats that had been traumatized and also required a secure room while getting utilized to our family, I’ve made use of collapsible pet crates. Now we always maintain one helpful in instance of a feline emergency situation. Most cat cages can be taken apart or folded up so they can be saved in a wardrobe, garage, or exterior shed.
Cages are quite a bit a lot more large than providers, as well as often consist of beds, boxes, and sets down. According to the Association of Shelter Veterinarians, vertical room is even more important than straight space for cats: “… felines show a choice for spending even more time on elevated surfaces as well as high structures than on the floor.” You’ll require area in there for food as well as water as well as, at a good range from the feeding location, a can.
A feline unit ought to offer some alone space far from various other cats, with a lot of room for your pet cat to stand up, turn around, sit, and rest. And unless your pet cat is on vet-ordered remainder, their time in the cage should be limited– pet cats require time to discover.
With all that in mind, we’ve located some good cages for house usage that examine these boxes– continue reading for our picks.

2019’s Best 3 Wheel Walkers Reviewed
No one wants to be dependent on a walker - or at least no one that I know. But if that time has come, how does the saying go, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em?” The loss of adequate mobility can lead to loss of independence. But for some, there's another adage that rings true. "It ain’t over till it’s over.”
The trick is finding a walker that works best for you - one that will help you retain as much mobility and independence as possible.
How I Discovered 3 Wheel Walkers
I've got to admit; I knew absolutely nothing about walkers until my dad could no longer get around without one. The day had come that the larger than life "He-Man" who boxed in the Navy and featured in the newspaper for heroically lifting a car off a fellow employee on the General Motors assembly line was unable to walk without help. He had fallen several times, and even he knew that one fall too many could be the one to take his independence entirely. It was time to shop around.
I read up on traditional style walkers but couldn't picture my dad using one. He does not make a good patient. He makes a terrible one. I knew I had to come up with something a little edgier, one that would let him get around more quickly than most. Thankfully, I stumbled across the miraculous three wheel walker!
What Exactly are 3 Wheel Walkers?
Walkers are devices that aid a person's mobility by offering support. Some have wheels and referred to as rollators. There are walkers with seats, Euro walkers, 4 wheel walkers and...3 wheel walkers.
Three wheel walkers are triangular. They have three wheels, one in the front and two in the rear. Generally, the walkers come with hand brakes and sometimes even have extra features, like a basket to carry your belongings in.
Positive Points
I discovered a ton of benefits the three wheel walker has to offer folks, like my dad, who want to retain as much independence as possible but at the same time, need a little help in doing so. To me, they are the sports car of the walker world. Here are some of the perks they bring to the showroom floor:
Three wheel walkers fit through narrow openings.
They are usually lighter weight than traditional walkers are.
Because of their triangular shape, they are easier to maneuver.
Most three wheel walkers are more manageable to guide than regular walkers.
They go faster.
They zip around corners.
The majority of 3 wheel walkers are compact - a cinch to transport and store.
Let’s face it...3 wheel walkers are just cooler than traditional ones!
Best 3 Wheel Walkers
Three-wheel walkers come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. They can be constructed out of all different materials and even come in different colors. In addition, many accommodate other needs you may have due to your circumstance or disability. With quality, craftsmanship, and special features in mind, the following three wheel walkers are ones that I found to be a step above the rest:
Drive Medical Winnie Lite Supreme Three Wheel Rollator
- If you are looking for an ultra-lightweight three wheel walker that can get you from point A to point B with ease, this model does the trick. It's a no-frills device that is very affordable. It's constructed of aluminum, so it weighs practically nothing but is super durable. The handles adjust the height from 32-38”. The tires are soft-grip which makes them perfect and practical for use both indoor and outdoors. The casters are 7.5", and there's a special loop lock that makes the device glide. The brakes are adjustable. This walker is only 26" wide so that it can fit through most openings. When you are done for the day, push the hinge, and it folds right up for compact storing.
Drive Medical 3 Wheel Rollator in Flame Red
If you were the one who had to have the red sports car, you’ll love this model by one of the best makers in the bunch, Drive Medical. And yes, you guessed right this is the one my dad just had to have (probably because it was red). There are some great features this three-wheeler has like its one-handed folding ability, lightweight aluminum construction, and lock knob for times you want it not to budge. The casters are 7.5" which are ideal for indoor and outdoor use. This device is just 24" in length and 25" wide, so it easily goes through most openings. The handle height is adjustable, 31"-38". This walker supports 300 pounds which was great for a big man like my dad. You even get a basket, pouch, and tray with this model.
Carex 3 Wheel Walker for Seniors
This model has 7” wheels for getting around inside and outside too. It is lightweight and easily folds so you can take it with you wherever you go and store it when you are through. What I like about the Carex is that it gets in and out of tight spaces and can cut around people in the grocery store aisle too. The wheels have locking brakes for safety, the height is fully adjustable, and it comes with a large storage bag with a spot for ID cards and your cell phone too. This is one of the most popular three-wheel rollators on the market and with good reason.
Nova Traveler 3 Wheel All Terrain Walker
The Traveler is built to do precisely that, to travel! It is a superb device for getting around in rough terrain like you might run across outside such as loose gravel, dirt, grass, rocky ground, and practically any other type of territory you might need or want to walk across. The rubber wheels are a whopping 8" which allows to go over rough terrain more easily. The paint and overall construction seems like it’s very high quality. Nova is known for being top notch. You'll get a zippered storage pouch, a basket, and even a handy tray with this model. There is a locking parking brake and adjustable handles too. This walker is 24" wide so that it can squeeze through super small openings. Nova backs this product up with a lifetime limited warranty.
Healthline 3 Wheel Lightweight Walker
If you need a super lightweight three-wheel walker, this one certainly fits the bill. It weighs in at only 13 pounds. Amazingly, it supports up to 300 pounds though. Being only 24" wide means, it can squeeze through tiny spaces. The handle height is adjustable, and it has brakes that are easy to grip. It also comes complete with a wire basket for storage, a safety tray that conveniently goes on the basket that can be lifted or placed back down, and a tote bag too. This model folds and unfolds easily so you can take it anywhere, even if you are traveling on the bus or in a small car. It is available in a stylish blue.
3 Wheel Foldable Walker with Shopping Cart
This walker is lightweight, and it quickly collapses to transport and to store. It seems like the easy-glide wheels help make it move smoothly. If you are a shopper, this model is ideal and even comes with a large storage basket to put your goodies in. There's a convenient slot for your ID cards too. The wheels are 7" which is a nice size. When you want to stop to grab something off the shelf or for whatever reason, you can lock the wheels into place, or you can use the hand brakes. Corners are simple to turn with this 3 wheeler. And one of the best things about this jewel of a walker is that you won’t need any tools to assemble it.
If you still haven’t found a 3 wheel walker that fits your needs, keep looking. You are sure to fall in love with one somewhere down the line.
Some Add-Ons
Why not “trick your walker out" as the kids say? Once Dad got over his stubborn pride and got into his "3 wheeler", as well called it, I can honestly say he made the best of it. The family got into the spirit too. We gifted him add-ons for his birthday, Christmas, and sometimes "just because." Here are some great items you can add on to your three wheel walker:
Drive Medical Universal Cup Holder
You’ll need a refreshing drink to take along on your walk, so you’ll need a spot to slip it in to keep your hands free. This cup holder fits many sizes of cups, glasses, and bottles and should fit onto most walkers too. It even swivels for convenience.
Tote for 3 Wheel Walkers
You definitely can take it with you when you go! This convenient carry tote pouch has a good bit of room so you can take your belongings with you. It folds into a 14” wide pouch and folds back up to be under an inch wide.
Walker Basket
You will need your hands to guide your walker and to help stabilize yourself, so you'll want a place to put shopping bags, your picnic lunch, or whatever else you want to take along with you. There are a multitude of walker baskets to choose from, but this one happens to be my favorite. This particular basket is for the Winnie Deluxe model, but it will fit many other three wheel walkers too. It is lightweight, yet sturdy, and holds quite a bit.
How Do You Roll?
Not ready to give up your independence yet? Neither was my dad. But when he finally came to grips with the fact that giving up a portion of his independence beat falling and possibly losing it all, he conceded to use a walker. Not just any walker would do, however. He had to level up. Maybe you are in the same situation.
I am not even sixty yet and am having to face the fact that I have a medical condition that causes me to limp and easily lose my footing. It’s called Myelopathy, a complication of Spinal Stenosis. Since I inherited my dad’s willful, independent spirit, I can tell you that when the day comes and I too am forced to depend on a walker, it won’t be any walker. “No sirree bobtails!" as Dad would say. I'll be behind the helm of a three-wheeler because that's how I roll. How about you?

Make 2019 The Year You Start Your Law Firm: A Buyer’s Guide To Essentials & Optionals For Lawyers Starting Out Lean
When I started my law firm back in the dark ages, a desktop computer and laser printer, telephone (remember what that is?) and Word or Word Perfect (for generating documents) were indispensable tools, along with business cards and a couple of legal pads. Laptops were still really expensive and still a bit of a luxury though without one, I was confined to working in my damp, dark basement where our home computer was located, without any confidence that I’d ever get my firm off the ground. Fortunately, my husband believed in me before I believed in myself – and bought me the $1500 laptop that took me out of my basement and into the world. With the laptop, I could work from the Library of Congress or one of the cubbyholes in my virtual office where I met other attorneys and a year later, I was on my way with enough clients to afford a full-time space where I’d spend the next decade.
That laptop wasn’t really a “must-have” purchase – I probably could have plodded along, making due on the desktop in the basement until I found clients who paid the bills. But in retrospect, it turned out to be a game-changer if only because it served as a constant reminder of my husband’s faith in me. Likewise, many of the tools included in the guide listed below, while eminently practical aren’t indispensable to starting your firm. But they’re nice to have and could, like my laptop, propel you in a direction that you never expected or simply make your life a whole lot easier – especially if you’re starting out from home or a part-time co-working space. So, if you plan to make 2019 the year to start your law firm (you can view the replay of last week’s webinar here), consider putting some of these items on your gift wish list.

Chromebook
As I wrote here, I’m a big fan of the Chromebook, which is a machine designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the cloud. But in contrast to iPads and tablets which are similarly Internet-dependent, Chromebooks have a full screen and keyboard so they’re more functional plus they cost a lot less. If you work from home or out of coffee shops or travel a lot, a Chromebook is a dependable work companion.
I purchased this Acer Chromebook a couple of years back when I traveled out of the country and still take it with me instead of my laptop on short trips. But if you’re looking for something even lower in price, check out the Dell Chromebook or Samsung Chromebook which are both under $170.
Printers
As law practice becomes digitized, many attorneys no longer have much need for a printer. In my practice, although I have access to a common printer located in the common area of my space, I prefer to keep a small printer in my private office for smaller jobs. I use something similar to the HP Laser Jet Pro , though if you anticipate having to make color copies, you might consider the HP Laser Jet Pro . For large projects like briefs, I outsource production.
There are also several types of special-use printers for different purposes that are as useful or more so than a conventional printer. The portable HP Sprocket will print tiny photos on the go, while the Canon Pixma works for mobile printing. Finally, many lawyers swear by the Dymo Label Printer for everything from file and mailing labels to printing postage.
Scanners & Shredders
As recently as three years ago, a workhorse scanner was an integral component of a paperless practice. Not so much anymore — at least for a national or federal court-based practice like mine where most of the documents that I receive from clients or the court are already in electronic format. Still, for many other types of practices, lawyers still deal largely in paper and therefore need a powerful scanner to digitize paper as soon as it comes through the door. The Fujitsu iX 500 SnapScanner has long been the gold standard for lawyers – and in fact, it’s the version that I used for almost a decade until I no longer had a need for a scanner. Of course, there are other of scanners — some reviewed here that are less expensive. Still, if you’re going to be doing a lot of scanning, the Fujitsu is the way to go.
For occasional scanning or scanning on the road, you can use your phone (I use the Genius Scan app on my iPhone) or an inexpensive portable scanner like the Brother Mobile 620 which is $79.
What to do after you scan paper copies? Check to see if your malpractice policy or retainer agreement requires you to retain originals. If not, then send those copies through the shredder .
AI and Voice Assistants
If I were starting out today, I would purchase an AI or Voice Assistant like the Amazon Echo or Google Assistant and incorporate both tools into my practice and workflow from the get-go. Why? Because sooner than we realize, most consumers will come to depend on AI-powered bots and Alexa and Siri and similar tools to help them make decisions about what products to purchase and even what lawyers to hire . In order to understand how consumers will use these tools in the future, it’s critical to get out in front and use those tools yourself. And there’s no better way to get a head start than by incorporating tomorrow’s tools into your practice today.
Right now, the Amazon Echo (which I use at home) holds the lead for legal business integrations, synching with some practice management platforms for time tracking and performing other business tasks . That said, be aware of stories like this one that raise concerns about confidentiality of AI assistants. As confidentiality issues sort out, tread cautiously, but that’s no reason to avoid AI assistants. Instead, employ them to operate appliances, create Flash Briefings for clients (like legal marketer Nancy Myrland ) or just listen to music or audio books to the work environment a little more pleasant.
Security Camera
Sometimes, online security breaches originate offline – either through employees using a computer that doesn’t belong to them or cleaning crews rifling through your desk after-hours in search of passwords or financial data. The Amazon Security Cam – which works with Alexa – lets you keep an eye on what’s going on even when you’re not around.
Standing Desks
For sedentary lawyers who spend much of the workday sitting, standing desks offer real health benefits. If you have your own office or unlimited space, you can purchase a desk that can adjust to standing height – there are many options though some can be costly. Still, you can experiment with a standing desk with less commitment by choosing an elevated desk that mounts on top of your existing desk. One such option is the Innovadesk which sits atop your existing desk, and convert it into a standing desk. The Innovadesk is large enough to support dual monitors. Another option is the Standing Desk Elite – it will hold only one monitor but no assembly is required.
Laptop Stands
If you work in a part-time co-working space (as opposed to one where you have a full-time office or dedicated desk), chances are that you are working off a laptop and sitting at a desk that you can’t adjust to suit your comfort. That’s where a laptop stand comes in to play: you can adjust the height to make it more comfortable – or, play around with the angle for a more flattering view if you’re participating in a video call or broadcasting a Facebook live. Two of the stands that I see most commonly in the office where I work are the Lamicall Laptop Riser and the Macally Laptop Stand for Macs. If you work on the go or at a virtual office or co-working facility where you don’t have a dedicated space, this foldable laptop stand is fully portable so you can take it along on the go.
On the Go
Back when I split my time between a part-time virtual office and home office, I remember how difficult it was to always be on the go. I didn’t have a car back then nor did Uber or rideshare services exist – so I’d cram my laptop, dress shoes and lunch into my briefcase (if they fit) or an old backpack and lugged it all downtown on the metro. These days, I have a space to call home, but starting out, that may not be true for you – and these suggestions can make a nomadic professional life — bouncing from spot to spot each day — a little easier.
First, though briefcases are nice, they weren’t intended to carry the kitchen sink. Instead, invest in a rolling laptop or trial bag that you can use for court but also just to haul your belongings. This Perry Ellis laptop bag seems spacious, as does this Samsonite Wheeled Catalogue Case – and both will allow you to carry your office along with you with ease.
Another lifesaver that I always have on hand no matter where I go is the humble power strip . For a tiny investment , you can ensure that your computer and phone are always connected – while connecting with others around you. For the same reason, I also like having a powerful charger along with me which I can share with others when their batteries run low. Although the MyCharge Hub can be a bit fragile (I’ve had the plug break off or the USB connector snap on past models), I’m still a fan because of its long lasting and reliable charge.
Podcasting and Instagram
Back when I started out, lawyers marketed through websites and later blogs. I launched my website in 1996, well ahead of the wave, and kept out in front with my blog. Today, podcasts are growing in popularity as too is video. Lawyers starting a firm today should be poised to leap on these trends as I did back in the day. And one way to do that is to be prepared by having the equipment you need a podcast or video at your fingertips. Fortunately, neither podcasting nor video casting (or v-logging) requires much in the way of investment. Good quality sound is necessary for a podcast or video – I like my easy to use Snowball mic (I used it for webinars) but the gold standard is the Blue Yeti .
In addition to good sound, video also requires a well-lit room (nothing less professional than looking like a lawyer from the Blair Witch Project ). Reasonably priced lighting options include Limo Studio – both affordable and easy to set up and break down.
To record a video, you may not want to be tied to your desk. A phone works better – most phones have great resolution and you can use your phone’s headset to improve the sound quality. Another benefit of video recording on your phone is that you can move to a better lit location if you haven’t purchased lights – and also sit, stand, walk or assume whatever position makes you feel most comfortable. To do that, you’ll need to set your phone up on a tripod or use a selfie stick: the Youzon selfie stick and tripod will work for desk top filming; if you need a taller tripod, check out the Flexible Tripod and Selfie Stick for Vlog and Videos.
Home Office Necessities
Working from home – particularly if you live in a small house with kids or pets – can prove challenging without a dedicated space for a home office. From all those years working from home, I discovered that the situation was manageable so long as I could establish a personal space for myself (even if it was just by putting a couple of bookcases around a desk and maintain sufficient storage to contain my work and hide it away when I was done for the day. Because my firm expanded over time, it was also important to have flexible and affordable furniture that could be added on and later, put away in storage or repurposed if I moved back to a full-time office outside the house. Here are some of the products that I found useful:
Folding Bookcases Bookcases like this Easy Assembly Bookcase or these ladder bookcases were a lifesaver – quick to set up on my own and ensuring that I always had enough storage space without having to stack milk crates like a college kid.
Ottomans Ottomans also offered a great way to contain larger messes – like stacks of paper exhibits or 3000-pages of appellate records before e-filing was a thing. The Beleze Tufted Gray Ottoman and Avalon Rectangular Faux Leather Ottoman are affordable and functional, providing storage space that can be pushed up against a wall – and double as a bench where the kids to hang out. If you tend to work closer to the family room or on the couch, you can stow your laptop and belongings in something like the Burlington Leather Ottoman .
Room Dividers I always found that room dividers came in handy to both stake out my territory and hide my mess from guests. I used fairly generic screen dividers like these which worked fine though they were a bit flimsy. Looking around Amazon, I found the Diamond Room Dividers which look sturdier and more functional because they have built-in mini-shelves, and also these Chalkboard Dividers where you could jot down notes or let your kids decorate while you’re working.
Printer Stand and Storage You may not have much real-estate on your home-office desk if you’re using one of the stand-up desktop options mentioned earlier, or if a small desk was your only option. A printer stand and cabinet like the Little Tree Printer Stand and Storage will help preserve that precious desk real estate and also keep supplies and paper away from little hands.
